I need a battery with enough guts to start a 1098 but small enough to fit between the airbox and tank on the monster. What is the smallest size, dimensionally and power wise, that I could get away with fitting?
I use one of these, it can turn my TLR engine over easily even with all the auto de-comp gear removed. Shorai Lithium Iron Extreme-Rate Battery LFX18A1-BS12 | eBay
If you were to buy a shorai I would buy it from a u.k. seller such as SHORAI POWERSPORT LiFEPO4 BATTERIES - CARROT CYCLES - (Powered by CubeCart) . I use one on my 999 the first I had I got off ebay and theres no warranty from the u.s. it went wrong so I got my second from uk and theres a three year warranty . I think .
amazing - would be interested to know typical longevity of these batteries from any owners who have run them for a year or more.
I have a bigger one in my 1098 although its new. I had trouble with the previous battery balance charging. Although they state they won't honor stuff shipped to UK, they were great with me. I had to pay shipping to US but the battery was 8 months old I shipped it back and paid the difference in price for a bigger size and a new one was shipped. They were absolutely brilliant with communication and no quibbles. I would recommend you purchase their charger, these batteries consist of banks of lower voltage cells in series (and parallel). If you do not charge the banks separately from time to time then it will shorten the battery life. You can also purchase balance chargers from aero modelling shops but Shorai config on the balance plug is different. So unless you want resolder up a new cable to match the config I'd stick with the proprietry charger. If you do go down the aero modeller charger route PM me I'm pretty sure I have a note of the Shorai and standard config pin outs which would tell you what cables to change John
I had a long conversation with Carrot at the festival of 1000 bikes and would go with them when i renew , be aware you need a different charger to suit which they also sell .
Got an email for Carrot, stating the size of the one I need. It seems similar to the standard battery, just not as tall. Might need a tiny one with an Anderson connector.
FE Go to Shorai's webpage. The battery Carrot may be recommending for the bike maybe be partly because it fits in the exisitng battery box & you may find another model to suit your requirements. Ballistic in the US also seem to get a good reputation and generally theirs are even smaller for a given Ah/CCA rating. I have never used Ballistic. Cold Crank Amps are probably more important than an Ah rating.
