Monster 620ie custom advice...

Discussion in 'Monster' started by givethedrummersome, Feb 1, 2014.

  1. Hi All.

Newbie here! First post on the forum, first Monster and first road bike, so pretty new!!

I have just bought this 2002 620 ie dark (see pic attached) and need some advice on some customisation...

    1. Can anyone point me to the best kit / bracket for a full chop (actually cutting the frame)? I want to add the LED style light with the integrated indicators, so best kit bearing in mind no actual indicators needed?

    2. Also, is it ok / legal to have a black number plate, with white / silver pressed digits? Also, what is the smallest number plate legally allowed?

    3. I really want the matt black look - how far can I go with this - eg the crank shaft cover is flaking, is it advisable to have it sprayed matt black or will this simply flake also? - what else can I do to matt this up?

Thanks for any help in advance on the above.

  2. Careful with the frame chop, not only will you get soaked when it rains it also drops the resale value of the bike as most ppl don't seem to like chopping any more. Carful with the rear light and indicators, I think by law these have to be separated, I'm not too sure how H-D get around this but for deffo you're not allowed them in the same lens. I'd have to you to get rear ended and your insurance was invalid.

1972 was the last year for black and silver plates, trust me you don't want the hassle, full size as you most prob have is the smallest you can legally use

Matt paint can be used, just clean, prep and prime it correctly.

Word of warning, don't make it too individual, you could have real issues when you come to trade it in or sell it. Prob best not to do anything you can't easily un-do...

  3. The above statement is true,

Mines completely chopped about and can't sell it at all, will end up being broken. As it's worth more in bits

if it's a keeper, then do what you want to it,

  4. There is a particular year, I can't remember which, that if your vehicle was registered before you can legally have a smaller plate. After that date it has to be full size. I think it's 2001 but I'll check...

  5. Wow so I can have black plate on my m900 I know where I am going with that.

Chop if you want and do not care about re-sale value but that rule applies to most mods.

Integrated indicators are not illegal per say there is however legal spacing between them and I am quite certain monster light is to small for that. Maybe rules changed.

If you want to go proper black things you can do that will not flake off, pegs, bars, yokes, forks, everything relating to head-lamp and its mountings, swing-arm and suspension hop/rod, suspension pivots.

You could ceramic cote entire exhaust black as well.

Regarding engine cases can be done so it does not come off, rest will get tired but how quickly depends what quality paint and how many wet miles you do. Finally it is air cooled motor so painting it black will raise temp, well painting at all I would say.

  6. If you check out visor down, there is some information on plate sizes

  7. Thanks for all your advice guys it is appreciated.

I picked this up for £1,700 (2002, 7,000 miles) so not a huge investment for my first bike, although I have to say I love it and find it amazing what you can get for your money in the bike world! I mean what could you buy for that money that will turn heads like this baby will :)

Have another 1k to spend on it - it needs a service (not sure how much that is?) + some mods.

Love this one (although I know this has had thousands spent on it!!)...

This bike is going to be for fun, as oppose to my dedicated form of transport, so I cant really see myself taking it out in the rain as I have a car also.

Shame it would lose value with a tail chop though :(

Do you think I would get pulls from the police for having just the integrated light then, rather than separate, dedicated indicators?

Here is the light I am looking at...

    What do you think?

Great forum BTW - Thanks guys...

  8. Bloody shame!

  9. You could just take off the ugly tea tray thing and make a bracket for the rear light and number plate, then the back would look a lot cleaner and smaller

think I've got a bracket you can have. That was on mine before I changed the back and moved the number plate further back, I'll take a picture and pop it on here.

Were abouts do you live. As you could look at the rear of mine for an idea

  10. I am in Hertfordshire...

Would love to see a pic :)

Thanks for your help mate - very kind.

  11. Mines in the for sale section. You can see the tail chop etc and a few other bits

  12. Loving this thread

Keep away from the black and silver plate though (1972 is the cut off date) of at best you'll get a talking too, at worst you'll get a fine. Don't ask how I know!

  13. Not far off how mines done.

Mine has been cut right back and a metal plate made to follow the shape of the seat.

That has holes and a bracket that the plate sticks to. Plus the tail light is fixed to the plate aswell. The guy that built that bit made it was clever. Just needs a good tidy up.

Ill take the seat unit off when I get time and post the picture. As the seat is held in place with bolts now that go through the metal plate.

  14. The bike was already done when I bought it. I just changed the digital dash for the twin one and changed the front headlight etc and changed the rear end so it was less cluttered.

This bike was originally blue and white standard s4r. I have the pictures from when he px'ed his zx10r for it.

  15. Pm your email and I'll send over afew pictures I've taken today

  16. Nothing wrong with a tail chop imho. Loads of monsters have it and it doesn't make them unsellable or even less valuable really.

Adding clip-opns changes the look loads and is an easy mod, but means no bikini fairing unless you mod one and you have to change the lock stop to mean your fingers dont get crushed on the tank. But i love that look
