Hi, my pals got a mint original 3000 mile 748 SP he's thinking of selling and asked me what it's worth. I've not seen enough for sale recently to give him an idea so guesses start here. I know it needs a full service as it's not turned a wheel in anger for 6-8 years and if he's done 1000 of the miles on it in the 10+ years of ownership that's about all. I've been telling him for a good few years not to sell, but I think the time might be approaching. I was thinking about £6000 but know I could be miles off. It's an early brembo 3 spoke wheel type. Any idea chaps and chapettes?
Seems overpriced considering its lack of use and gamble on what the innards are going to be like, but hey, the World is your Lobster
The SP came before the SPS and I have a 1999 model (SPS) with 10,000 on the clock. It was one of only 20 imported as a genuine UK model in that year and only 100 were imported in the three years they were sold here. Therefore mine is quite rare and has a genuine provenance to accompany it. I paid £3,600 for it a few years back and it was a bargain. I think £6,000 is too high and personally I would say £4,000 is nearer the mark and that would be a good price. It's down to what anyone is prepared to pay for it though.
Oh right, well I'm glad I never told him what I thought. I'm guessing at these values it'll be sitting getting polished a few more years before the collectors start getting interested. It's a shame to know it's not being used, I had a 748bp for years, I'm guessing the so would be even more fun.
My '97 SP got £3k part-ex for my MTS. It had been dropped with bent lockstop and water pump cover, and had potential rocker problems in the pipeline. On the plus side it'd just had new tyres and full service.
Ducati 748 sps 1999 £3500 | Gloucestershire | Gumtree This is for sale on gumtree... I'm tempted myself...
I see it is a 1999 on a R reg plate, that is not correct as that would make it no newer than 1998 (R reg is between 01 August 1997 and 31 July 1998). The seat is either carbon, possibly, or a dodgy stick on Carbon effect. Clearly it's not the original as it has the wrong paintwork and graphics. Different levers and different mirrors can be seen and what looks like Sil moto Carbon silencers, non stock indicators and no floating discs. It looks like this may have been in an accident or something. I would view this very carefully if it was me. On the face of it it could be an SPS though, but not a very original one. It might also be an import. Even more a non stock airbox either through colour or it's carbon, can't tell from the photos. I am pretty sure those panels are not original or have been painted. So all in all not a very genuine SPS and I don't see how you can lose a set of discs other than in an accident or have some problem like wear or other damage. The discs should not be worn in 13,000 miles. Then there is the question of the other extras that came with the bike as new, I doubt they are available. I would say look very hard for £3,500. I'd go for knocking him down if it were me.
been to look at this bike and definitely not an sps. steel sub frame, non floating discs and no oil cooler. bike is an import and sometime during its registration its had sps added to the document. its still a very tidy bike but not what it says on the tin! in my view its a standard 748 with some bits added
Does the seller actually think it really is still an SPS then or does he now accept it is not? It's certainly going to lower the price\value on it for a couple or more counts, it's not an SPS, it's not very original even for a stock 748 and it's an import. That puts it down to maybe about £3,000, if that, in my opinion. I wondered if he has\had been fooled into really thinking it's an SPS.
yes he did buy it as an sps. he's had it a year and it was his 1st bike. felt a little sorry for him as he's really looked after it and is very tidy. he now knows what it is and was going to call the people due to view this weekend to put them in the picture because he didn't want anybody to make a wasted trip so I think he is a genuine sort of chap who's been had
Shame in that case, and it's very easy to fool someone who knows nothing about the differences in the models. It would have helped if it had not been an import as that puts some people off.
