Hi all, I'm new to the site, I was on the old Ducatisti site after owning a Hypermotard which I really had issues with if I'm honest and swore never to buy another Ducati, I presently own a few sports bikes the most recent being a RSV4 factory which I'm having issues with re-calls and waiting 4 1/2 months for parts and am considering buying a second hand multistrada probably an S model as I like the carbon, can anyone advise what to look out for second hand as I've seen a few 2-3 year old low mileage ones. If there are real issues I will steer clear. I'm hoping for honest answers not the usual we love and worship the bike and forum answers please as I simply wouldn't have bought the RSV4 if I had known the issues. 1. Do they need servicing every 2 years or is at mileage? 2. What do I need to look out for. 3. What are the common faults/issues? 4. What do I need to look out for buying second hand. Genuine replies would be grateful, thanks in advance. Cei
Check out the Snells site, used bike site. There is a lovely 1200S for sale there, mine! They are moving it on for me as I am off the road for 2 years with a medical issue that has meant That I have had to relinquish my licence to the DVLA.
Answers.. 1. As per usual Ducati servicing 2 years or 15K miles 2. Again usual stuff, service history, mileage, chain/sprockets, belts etc 3. Rear brake, porous heads - coolant, check that it's been done as a recall, exhaust valve sticks, if you're going for S models check for DES errors, steering lock issues, switchgear issues, worn heated grips to name a few. 4. All of the above.
Yes small service annually or 7,500 miles whichever comes first....big service (valve check, belts etc) at 15,000 miles (or for the belts 5 years whichever is sooner). Welcome Cei..... 1) as above 2) as already said..... and look good and close at things like engine cases, may be early stages of corrosion (creeping tracks under the paint), well used bikes/all year bikes will have obvious signs! 3) there is a pretty long list of potential faults but few affect all bikes but some could be rather expensive if they occur out of warranty - many owners are buying WarrantyDirect cover at around £330pa once Duc cover ends. 4) and all of the above - spend some time in the Multistrada section of the forum. The Search feature works pretty well, I just searched 'buying' and came up with several useful discussions with first two pages of results. Good luck, let us know how things pan out either way ;-)
Thanks for the response guys, it's given me a good idea what to look for and what to read up on, the main concern that I can see with the S model is the DES which can be costly and reading various posts on here it seems to be a common fault, I'll read up more but this is pushing me to the standard model instead. Thanks all.
Reading the posts on here about the reliability on the MTS is starting to scare me, do they get more reliable with age and should I avoid the 2010/2011 ones, the shock issues on the S model seem expensive or are the posts simply small issues where people are having a moan? I understand where their coming from as I've had issues with my RSV4 factory.
