Mechanical Engineers - Help Please... Looking for a specific type of fixing.

  1. I am trying to see if I can buy an off the shelf component which I will now describe. Please excuse my lack of correct terminology.

I need a nylon top hat washer with a threaded outside. I need to run a 5mm bar through the centre (this size can change if holes to suit 5mm aren't available. I want to fix this nylon spacer through a piece of angle iron, with a nylon nut on the back to pinch it in to place.

I don't know where I should look to find this thing, or if it has a specific name to search for. The only company I know of is RS Components and I can't find anything on there.

    Thanks

  2. I can picture what you are looking for. Now I need to rack my brain to where ive seen one. Have a look at Automation processes too as well as RS.

It might be easier to find some nylon bar and ask someone to turn one for you. Nylon bar is for sale on ebay. I used a large bit to make a new 'spider' for my Telescope.

Ive also seen these as 'plugs' with a hole rather than a threaded end. If you find these then run a file round it to create a channel and use a circlip to secure.

Ive a feeling ive seen similar on my campervan but I am struggling to remember where.

It will pop into my head randomly, ill post when i remember.

  3. Thanks! I need to buy in bulk so I needed ones that were good to go rather than a one off part I could manufacture. I'll get a few of these and tap them for now.

    Thanks :)

  4. That would be the reverse side of the top hat. I want to use a nylon top hat as a wearing surface for a steel bar. I need the top hat and nylon nut to hold themselves in place while the bar runs through the middle.

  5. ok, think I understand now, I'm sure someone does it, I'll keep thinking

  6. Bulkhead fittings sound like the part you are after. or electric cable gland fittings or conduit fittings but depends
on what the part has to do.

    brian.

  7. Flange...? I know it's not, but any excuse...

  8. Cable gland?...

  9. cable gland. Spot on. Was just thinking this too.

  11. It is just to keep the rod running smoothly, doesn't need to be a full bearing in there though. I'm going to give that nylon top hat a go held in place with an r-clip and see how it goes. It's prototype stage any way so it can be changed. I remember now why I quit my apprenticeship as a design engineer. It was super boring doing drawings all day. Been doing it again this week and it is still boring!

Can anyone tell me what this kind of clip is called... IMG_3301.JPG

  12. A hinge clasp?
