My bike (2011 Hypermotard 1100EVO) had to go back to the dealer for some work and I asked him to take a look at an oil leak that appears to be coming from the rear head bolt on the rear head. The dealer said it's sometimes better to leave a small leak rather than go through all the work to cure it? It's bugging the hell out of me, but is he right?
Yep get it fixed. They're supposed to be sealed units. Normally these kind of leaks are caused by overtightening of bolts, which then deform the gasket by the smallest of margins. That's just enough to get a fine spray of oil coating the bike :-(
if it was designed to leak oil it would be fine but how long before it becomes a large oil leak nip it in the bud .........
Not a bad idea. The bike was in their for a warranty issue (shift lever jammed in neutral) and the dealer I bought from agreed to it being done at my local dealer as they are miles away and it would have cost to collect and deliver. I thought the local dealer would have been happy to carry out the work as someone else was paying? Bike has only 1100 miles on the clock, I don't feel it should have a leak so soon.
agrees with the others. newish bike and leaking oil??? not normal and can never be a good thing. i'd want to get it sorted sooner rather than later, if it were mine. br, ian
