Hi all I bought my 2000 SPS last year. About to take it to it's first MOT. It has 50mm Termis, which the previous owner said were 'standard' and wouldn't pose a problem at MOT time. He had last 5 yrs of MOT certs, which I have now. Spoke to my local friendy MOT chap and he said that the rules state the exhaust noise should be "no louder than standard exhausts in good condition" or (words to that effect). He said that I'd need to bring some evidence that the exhausts were standard because he can't possible know every detail of every model of every bike. So, my first Q is...are my 50mm Termis standard or not? 2nd Q is...can anyone tell me where I might find some evidence on the internet that I could take to the MOT station. I think he'll be fairly relaxed about it. Don't think I need a signed letter from the ceo of Ducati!! In fact, if someone on this forum is a bit of an expert and posts something that sounds convincing, then that might even be good enough. Thanks in advance if that happens in the next few days!! Cheers Rich
50mm Termis aren't "standard" the bike would have come with them....but if you look hard enough...you'll see "for race use only" on the straps that go round the cans. The bike should have "standard" aluminium cans that are "E" marked.....along with a "chip" to run them!!
Baylissboy, you've just ruined my evening!! The 'correct' answer was "of course the termis are standard, and you'll have no problem with the MOT!" Damn it!! Ah well, I'll just have to see if my friendly MOT chap is in a good mood on the day. I'll take him a nice big bar of fruit n nut. That'd get me onside every time.
You MOY tester is being anal. As long as it doesnt say FOR RACE USE ONLY on them your fine and within the compliance regs. And some models did come with 50mm carbon termis as standard. As for his comment that he needs evidence, thats his problem not yours. A stpid statement he has made - go elsewhere and give them the money. Sometimes it pays not to ask MOT guys anything too.
Just polish the 'Not For Race Use' off the strap, it isnt engraved that deeply. Tell him its that noisy because of the clutch.
SPS's came with both alloy quiet cans and Termi proper cans as standard when they were originally sold. I have a polished set of Termi carbon proper cans on mine (polished on the stainless steel to remove any anoying writing) and a set of never used alloy cans in the loft. You may get an advisory that the exhaust may be a bit noise from a real MOT tester.
My termis had "for race use only" stamped on them but I bought a couple of e marked stickers to cover them up. Mark
Cover the "race only" with some gaffer tape or similar. If MOT man can't see it he can't fail it, I do believe he isn't permitted to remove said tape... I've got a few bike through using this method....
As others have said, go to another MOT station. My SPS has never had the 50mm Termi system off and has never failed an MOT in the 13 years that I've had it.
My SPS also passes its MOT with the 50mm Termis on - the worst I ever had a was an appreciative verbal comment "its a bit loud innit!"
Thanks to all. I'll check the metal straps and see if there's any polishing to do. Or taping. At least I've got some experts on here letting me know that it quite possible that my cans are standard from new. I felt 100% about the guy I bought it from, he didn't strike me as a bs merchant. I'll go to the MOT with a confident swagger and just say the pipes are standard. I've also got loads of previous pass certificates so I don't think I'll have a problem on the day. Cheers again to everyone who took time to reply to my Q. R
mate, from experience put a sticker over the 'not road legal' they are not allowed to remove it have a decent bunch of chaps at a local bike shop ( i am lucky enough to have great local dealer, non ducati, and they are sound) and they are happy to get you through mine hits 106db which was load enough to stop me doing an Oulton Park track day worked for me
These are the stickers I used. They were metallic - almost foil like - which doesnt seem to show in the photo but they looked great. Mark
The 'Race use only' on Termis is on the top of the strap so can't be seen unless you remove the cans or the undertray. It does tend to disappear if you polish your cans though...
Thats not the top of the strap and that is where the offending print was on my Termis on a 1098. It was clearly visible to anyone who looked underneath unfortunately! Mark
On the 916SPS I had and the 998R the above applies, so would expect yours to be the same, so no tell tale there. My mot bloke has never started my bike, so never complains about noise. I'd find another station if there's one local.
