Been out for a ride today , not good . Had to limp back home ... Did about 15 mile & it started to cut out , then pick up throttle then completely cut out . Took 2 go's to start .. Ok when stood still & would rev ok , but as soon as you had 5 mins of riding it started to die then a spurt of acceleration , then slow loss of throttle , then jerk & accelerate again did that for rest of the ride back & when you tried to give it more throttle it would come to a stall , that didn't help . In just two months back I had the bike into the dealers for the big 16,000 miles service as well . When it went it had 16,753 miles , since then tax the bike 1st of May, only covered 86 miles .. So I'm thinking is the problem connected to the service ??? It would great for any advise on this one ,.. I'm sure everyone is making the most of this nice weekend , ride safe everyone ,Cheers Dave gatenby
Pump relay. Behind battery box. While you are there, relocate it to the top of the battery box for future ease of access.
Last year mine would cut out, and back on again, then finally cut out and not start. It was like hitting the engine kill switch and then flick it back on. Faulty side stand switch was the problem.
Thanks carbon749 for your reply . I will check that out . It's always the easy diagnosis that we over look, ie side stand kill switch .. Might save a trip to the dealers ... Cheers for your help ,
If it's kill switch, side stand switch etc, the fault will feel like the engine has been switched off while riding and back on again. If the engine still revs and splutters, then less likely to be a faulty switch. A faulty switch can be intermittent, but, will be on or off. Good luck with sorting it.
Cheers Carbon749 just had a look at side stand kill switch & I think that isn't causing the problem ,, as when I was riding back home the engine did keep running it just dropped off of revs & then had a sudden increase of revs. While I maintained a set position on the throttle .. But if I tried to increase the throttle & get abit more higher revs , it would make the decrease of revs worst & it would cut right out & stall ,, so the other chap Rickyx suggested fuel pump relay ,, so I think that might be my next option , do you know if this common problem with 749r ,, ... Cheers for help , most appreciated
Fuel pump relay is a common problem on all 749 / 999, that said, fingers crossed, mine has never suffered any relay problems.
Cheers , I'll keep posting updates on my progress That's good news that yours hasn't had this problem
At the risk of sounding like @El Toro, alright Dave! In all seriousness, it might be an idea to put your location in your profile - even if it's just to the nearest county. You might have a friendly local who might be able to help
Hi to everyone that replied .. Just a quick update .. I saw on the forum where to locate the fuel pump relay . Started disassembling the battery housing , carefully disconnecting wires to the fan etc & heat shield that protects ECU & pump relay ,, got it disconnected , it was well greased & not corroded .. & sourced a replacement ,, got a perfect copy form a local car electrical supplier company ( call them Electro diesel from stockton-on-tees ).. It only cost me £4,73 . Cheap at half the price , fitted it , & just been out for short test ride everything seems fine. Also previously I always had difficulty starting the duke always turning over a lot of times before starting , but after fitting the new relay , it fired up within one second of pushing the starter , so I think it's been faulty for a while ,, I have just recently had a full 16,000 miles service with a ducati dealership which cost me nearly £2,000 , but got a discount on it which was good ,, but not good when I only had. The bike do 80 Miles & nearly breakdown on me ,, so fingers crossed when I go for a long ride out
Excellent! I hope you took the opportunity to relocate the relay to the top of the battery box while you were at it.
Gatenby.d . The picture on your image is that the bike you are referring to . I only ask as it looks to be an S not an R . All 749R had monoblock calipers and the boxed swingarm . Dont want to be the bearer of bad news but its also earlier than 2005 .
I've been out this morning covered just 60 miles , short ride out .. Got another snag to sort out . Coming back after the 60 miles the bike decided to lose throttle & cut out . I'd Park up. Switch ignition off & on started fine, ran well for a while , then stopped again. So it seems to be cutting out & a few times it eventually did pick back up on the throttle & kept it going ... But it was like it had just ran out of petrol .. But no kangaroo juice . I'm wondering if the battery could be faulty ,I had the bike 5 yrs now & it hasn't been replaced yet . I don't know how long it has been on the bike .. Or is it still the original problem? I would appreciate any ideas on what might be the cause !!!!
