996 Hub Trashed By Cush Drive

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Wellesley, Jun 17, 2014.

  1. So my cush drives have failed and eaten half of my hub adjuster. See photo if it ever uploads. What do i do. Looks expensive.

  2. Depending on how much it has 'eaten' it needn't be too bad or something you have to replace immediately. Fixing the loose cush drive isn't too bad and i'm sure you will check the others. You are probably aware that there are several sprocket carriers that remove this problem as i'm sure others will add in more detail.

  3. Like this;

Actually mine had enough metal left on the eccentric to still work and get the spanner on for adjustment, otherwise you need a new eccentric hub in which case ebay/breakers maybe the best option, I would imagine new is expensive.

When it's fixed get a Renthal sprocket carrier with the lip behind the cush drive holes to stop them backing out again...

  4. ^ I was there when you did that - Groombridge about 4 years ago?

  5. Indeed it was, luckily I only rode few miles with it grinding.
Got recovered home and hub was salvageable.:upyeah:

  6. Nichols in the US do a repair service for the hubs. It's possible they could just send you the replacement eccentric ring that they manufacture and then you could get it machined. The other option has already been mentioned although i would go with a Talon carrier as they are neater in my opinion.

  7. It's shagged isn't it. Sigh!

  8. the answer will lie with whether you can get a purchase on it to adjust - I reckon you probably can with care. Let's be honest unless you are a high miler/track demon, how often do you adjust your chain?

  9. Fair point Chris, will have a go at it, get myself a socket that fits sprocket carrier nut and order a replacement carrier. I'd be too honest to sell it on like this though :-(

  10. It looks too thin to get a decent purchase but as long as the pinch bolts are loose enough you may just be able to.

You need to remove it for cleaning anyway, mine had aluminium filings everywhere which aren't going to help in the bearings etc.

If you can get a replacement then swap it, if not you might get away with it for a while at least until a reasonable priced replacement comes along unless you want to get a new one?

I often see decent replacements on ebay for around £80, there are a few 1098 hubs and a HM796 on at the moment, I know the 1098 doesn't fit as it is a bigger axle but I'm not sure about the HM or 848 etc. as these (at least the 848) use the same carrier etc. and wheels are interchangeable.

  11. Thanks chaps. I'll be back with updates.

  12. Nothing wrong with declaring that on the advert when the time comes, it's how much of a knock would price take.

  13. Ive got a spare complete swingarm, hub, showa shock, ride height adjuster, bearings, rear brake cailper hanger and suspension rocker id let go for £200.The hub is like new and costs over £300 alone from ducati dealers.

I haven't got time to split it though so selling as a job lot

  15. If you have the time you could always split it up and sell the swingarm ,shock and other bits on here or fleabay.I would split it myself but busy getting my knee fixed this week for my return trip to France on Monday.

Im in the midlands if you want to come look at it or its easy for me to post to you.

  16. Ordered cush drives from moto rapido and a 41mm socket. Thats £100 already. Italian piece of shit ;-)

  17. I'd poss take the shock if you buy/split?

  18. Good plan. I'll assess in a few days

  19. For £200, that's a good deal, imagine what that little lot would cost from Ducati - probably more than the bike's worth.
