My First Ducati, Nervous And Excited!

Discussion in 'Newbies Hangout' started by Emily, Jun 30, 2014.

  1. Hi all, picked up my M900 (1997) on Saturday but I haven't been able to ride it yet- the belts/valves haven't been done since 2002 so I daren't ride it until its had a full service- very frustrating!

I'm in Cornwall and think I'll take it to GT's Plymouth, unless anyone has any better suggestions?

  2. Welcome Emily. Plenty of Corwallians or whatever theyre called on here. Oh its Cornish lol. Welcome anyway. :upyeah:

  3. Corwallians will do! Thanks, never been on a forum before!

  4. hi emily & welcome to the forum

  5. how do. love Cornwall.

  6. Welcome to the forum. Probably better safe than sorry with the belts; next time you may be able to do them yourself - there are helpful discussions/guides on the topic here, and I've just done the same job on my 900SS with confidence based on what I read here and a Youtube video or two. It does take a while longer than I expected, but that's largely due to access problems (rear shock out to do the rear exhaust valve clearance, on the 900SS anyway!).

  7. I've been to Cornwall. I think it's the Cornwalsh that live there. I could be wrong though.

Rode an M900 once, I think, a loaner from the dealer when my bike was being serviced. I could not stop grinning.

  8. thanks everyone, yeah I think a full stamped service for the first one and then start playing around with it at home- there's a whole article on changing the belts in Practical Sportsbike this month apparently.
Seriously cannot wait to take it out for a ride, watched someone ride off on my Triumph earlier and need to know it wasn't a mistake!!

  9. Ooo arrr Davina :)

  12. Hi Emily, I too live in Cornwall, and I take my 1200 Multistrada all the way to Riders in Bridgwater for servicing. Make of this what you will as a critique of the service received in the past at GT in Plymouth ;-)

  13. hello and welcome... Don't eat veal

  14. A mate of mine had an M900 (carb one) and sold it recently with 100k miles on it. Just basic servicing too. Good luck with the bike, I got my first Ducati a few months ago and couldn't be happier. You'll just be asking yourself why didn't you get one before?

  15. Top bike, it's going to take a bit of getting used to, and you may hate it initially, but you will soon adjust and love it. Good move on not riding until the belts are done, it's son incredibly easy job on the monsters though.

  16. Has that been to Baines within the last few years? When I was fact finding prior to my 900ss ie purchase in 2011 there was an M900 in there in full health with 100,000 on the clock.

  17. When was it last ridden? Would get someone who knows Ducati's to give it a once over before you ride it away. Welcome to the forum, they're a good bunch,(well most of them ;))

  18. It was in Dublin, Ireland. Commuted about 25 miles each day on it, rain hail and snow.

  19. Cool, so that's the second 100,000+ mile monster I've heard about. Damn this Ducati fragility...

The air cooled two valve motors really are very durable :)

  20. 100000 miles, love it! Hello Emily, good to hear of Ducatis in Cornwall. We'll be heading down on the bikes from London to see my family in Hayle/Penzance at some point in the next month or so.
