Ive been given the opportunity to play with a vintage eprom programmer, a handheld item that looks like an 80's calculator. I don't want to get too involved as I don't have either the time nor facilities to learn in depth, I just want to learn some basics. Knowledge is power after all... This whole situation came about as I need a different chip for the 748, the one I have is for a 748sps, and at the moment the bike has a standard engine fitted. This means that because of the h/c pistons that the sps has, and I believe a higher rev limit, the bike runs ok, but its hardly ideal. The things I would like to know are:- What modern software do people use nowadays, specifically for mapping bikes with a 16m ecu? Is the fuel pump controlled by the chip, or is that just a set parameter in the ecu? What brand/type of chip is recommended and what are the differences? Any other little gems of knowledge you would like to share. Thanks in advance men, I have posted this same question on other forums, but I hope this is the community that has the know.
Cheers Ross, but at 2k + keys it's a little bit outta my price range. £1 each for an eprom chip is much more up my strada. I'm surprised to have gotten no (useful) replies here, on a general m/c forum it was buzzing with information. I purchased a cheap Chinese eprom reader/writer and have successfully written a handful of chips. I have yet to delve into actually reprogramming tho.
I know you have had experience of CJS and he is probably one of the leaders in this area. The "Ducati" chip can be programmed to do far more than what it does right now. I have a 748R engine in a 748S frame and took it to the above for setting up, along with the correct mapping I also had a rev limiter set on the chip and each cylinder has been individually mapped. So for me it's not just the ability to read the chip it's knowing what to do with it after. Ducati stock chips are pretty poor for what they are and are very much a catch all type of thing. To be able to set a chip up properly you have to have the bike on a dyno and know what to do with it. I downloaded a lot of software from a free site a while ago but decided not to use it as experimenting with it might not have been too successful. As far as I can see any EPROM is good enough as long as it can be written and rewritten, as that is what EPROM stands for! although possibly a particular make might be more reliable. As I understand it the pump just runs off the ECU and as far as I can determine fuel pressure is improved by a different pump and the relief valve. This has been mentioned on the forum before and there is a higher pressure pump available that is a direct fit. I hope this helps, I realise it may not totally answer your question but when i looked at this I felt that this is best left to the realm of the experts as it wasn't worth my time getting too involved in the whole thing. Get the bike set up with all that you want to use on, cans, air filters etc. and then get it chipped. I appreciate it's interesting to know how it all ties in but it seemed to complex to me at the time to get too involved when ultimately I would be stabbing in the dark If I started altering settings. I hope this helps.
You can buy "Willem" chip programmers for a tenner of ebay these days. They will program a vast range of chips including the 27C256 that the Ducati 1.6Ms use. The idea is to download the chip into a file, the ROM dump. There is some 3rd party software that knows the offsets of the fuel maps and allows you to play with these in a ROM dump, change the fuel map, etc. You can then put that fuel map back onto a new chip (or rewrite one) and try it. You can use TunerPro to go from the ROM dump to a graph/grid that looks like a fuel map: TunerPro and TunerPro RT - Professional Automobile Tuning Software More info in this thread: 748-996 Tuning Software (FREE!) - Speedzilla Motorcycle Message Forums
