Hi all, I recently bought a 1997 M900 (chrome tank) and have been very excited about riding it but it had been a long time since the belts were changed, 12 years in fact, so I took it in for a full service only to discover a major engine repair job. it is covered in chemical weld and is leaking, when the oil isn't even hot. I'm looking at a new engine case (over £2k bought and fitted in ducati garage) or a new 2nd hand engine. either way it is hassle and seriously reduces the resale value of the bike. I have contacted the seller on Ebay and been offered a partial refund to cover repair costs or the full £2400 back and I return the bike, this would leave me about £350 out of pocket for getting the bike down, back up, garage costs so far, etc. plus I wouldn't have the bike I had fallen in love with the look of. What would you do?
I'd be looking at a full refund too. If they hadn't mentioned that, there may well be other little 'surprises' lurking about. Gutting as it is, from previous experience with cars that is the way I would go.
Agree with replies - it is not hard to find a decent Monster and I am sure the right bike will turn up for you. Good Luck!
That's a shame. I understand the disappointment, been in that position before with cars It's good of the seller to offer a refund, if it was sold as seen I will always trade my stuff in now to avoid comebacks even if I have never had trouble or no of any problems I'm trying to ditch my monster. But will only sell to a bike shop. Which is hassle taking it to various shops
No brainer, refund. Plenty of other monsters about. It's the sort of decision you could live to regret if you do not get out now. Use the protection of ebay and get your money back even if you are bit out of pocket.
I take it then, you got a warranty with the sale. Or was it sold as seen Or doesn't it make any difference buying and selling on ebay ?
sold as seen doesn't really count for a problem that can't be seen without taking parts of the bike off- don't know about you but I don't normally start undoing fairings when I look at a bike- don't think it would go down very well! It is covered by 'item not as described' a major problem like this should have been disclosed and wasn't- I was told it was a sound bike. I can't imagine the seller wasn't aware of the problem and the willingness to give a refund with no fight makes me think that even more, their conscience caught up with them perhaps? either way I am now looking for another Monster if anyone knows of one for sale!
That makes more sense to me, Not nice when they know there's a problem and lie about it. What kind of monster you after. I've a 54 s4r. Customised. Red and black. History. +1 Don't even think about pursuing a repair further - it'll be a money pit if that's what's been done to it already! Get your money back, £350 down is better than spending another £3500 which is what you'll probably end up doing to fix it and then bling it up urther because you've already spent so much. Put it down to experience and start again, in my opinion and now you know what to look for. Feel for you man But you've got an opportunity to get your money back so grab it with both hands

I would send it back and swallow the loss. Anyone who uses chemical weld would have bodged other more life threatening stuff
I don't. I have the digital dash it came with. And the light it had. But no original parts It's how it stands right now Will break if enough interest. Had a £1000 exhaust of a qd. Nearly new. Refurbed wheels. Brand new tank. Seat cowl. Etc. Any one wants to view or have a ride is welcome. Engine is great. Engine to be sold first. Still moted and taxed Call 0773 974 6372
As an owner of an S4R, and only done a few bits and pieces on my bike if the out side is that, the inside will more than likely be FUBAR. A basic head rebuild will cost you about £300 each, even used parts will break the bank. Get a refund (full amount) and go from there...
