1200 Help! Huge Bill For Can Line Error While Touring

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Firebladeboy, Jul 2, 2014.

  1. Oh christ. I've just noticed that all the DES functionality has vanished from my bike. Manual says BBS must be re-paired with DDS when installing a new one. Anyone know if I can do this or is it a dealer-only piece of work?

  2. :Banghead: FBB,
As ever on a forum like this there are huge amounts of accurate and really useful advice, most of which may well be able to solve your problem(s).
What I would advocate is getting the bike back to the UK, assuming, that is, it is still in Europe in a b/d state, using one of the man + van guys as has been suggested already and get it into a reliable, trusted Ducati dealership and let them fully diagnose the bike for you to help you make more informed decisions.
I understand that the guys in Bristol @ Luigi Moto (tel: +44 (0)1761 453366) are really techie wizards, so assuming you can get the bike there give them a call to see how they may be able to help you out.
Going forward based upon all of the well intended advice here could very easily establish the actual source of the problem, but then again....:Stop:
You pays yer money and you makes yer choice, but to me trial and error simply gives you what you end up getting.
Absolutely no offence meant whatsoever with regards to any of the excellent suggestions put forward to help here, however, if it was me I would opt for the right diagnostic approach first and foremost, then take it step by step.

Really good luck here with what looks like being either something pretty serious or the complete opposite, which clearly we all hope for you it is 'simples'. :upyeah:

  3. Hes got the bike back and is messing in his garage, next step was eiders as local dealse. Keep up ;)

Sounds like a dealer jobbie to me, or a specialist like louigi in Bristol

  4. Expert advice is always preferred, however if this can be tempered with some common sense you can save a fortune.

I assumed that since the question was being asked on here then expert advice was unavailable or too expensive for the o.p.

Don't get too hung up the rain theory.
    E.g.
Full service history, 100% reliable E240 Merc, wouldn't restart at the petrol station after a 700mile journey, super low on fuel. We wrongly assumed fuel issue as no smell of fuel after a long crank period. Note no obd bus.
Wrong, turned out to be either a crank or cam shaft position sensor. Don't know which as we changed both at the same time. Experts spent a long time on this and didn't fix it, but a public forum did.

    Example 2
    OBD2 code following engine replacement
Channel B 5v rail out of range.
    Expert Advice ECU needs replacing.
Actual cause reversed fuel rail pressure transducer connector.
Yes you could easily put it on upside down.
We could have followed the experts advice and professional diagnostic equipment or think "why would the ECU fail at the same time as the front crank bearing?"

  5. You need one of these! lol

.....also ideal for 'anal' owners who love OTT cleaning and maintenance regimes :D (errr....that'll be me then ;-) )

Don't really need it this time of year but essential imho when the weather's colder - superb bit of kit for getting your bike dry, drive water and damp from all those inaccessible places - a must for all motorcycle owners that want to keep their bikes in the best condition. (great for the car as well!;-)

  6. Hah!! I like it actually! :) I'm always scrambling to get my bike clean and dry before putting it away for a month or more while I work overseas. This would do the trick pretty well! :)

  7. So yes, hit a brick wall as I have no way to enable DES on the BBS. Oil Service was due anyway, so off to my local Ducati dealer it's gone. I painstakingly explained the full story and they took lots of notes, so we'll see. I politely emphasised that I DO NOT want to replace the loom and BBS (Again) for the sake of a damp problem! :) Of course, they're choc-a-bloc in their workshops so there's going to be a bit of a lull now (a few weeks I suspect) but I'll see what happens. I'll update this link when I know more.

  8. :Sour:
    Bradders,
You are so right, I must keep up!
    DOH...:Muted:

    Andy,
    Oh my god!!!
I've never seen any vehicles sooooooooooooo CLEAN! This must have taken you a 'virtual-lifetime'
You surely deserve an OBE or something for services to cleaning:upyeah:;)

  10. Glad too see someone else with one of these. I have the older model (black) and been using it for about three years now. Mates take the piss but it makes light work of drying a bike off. If you ride in winter like I do then its essential piece of equipment if you want a corrosion free bike. The big advantage is the ability to blast water out of hard to dry recesses. Point it behind the rad and get the other half to stand in front of the bike, hilarious how wet she will get. Leaf blowers which blast unfiltered air are crap in comparison. Expensive and bloody noisy but apart from that brilliant.

  11. Always fun getting the mrs wet!

Tony......I think I need therapy lol

  12. @AndyW what are you putting the abba into? Mine has solid swing arm bolts, I know coz I wanted to use my abba when I took the stand off and seemed no where for the pins to go!

  13. The fittings with my Abba Stand and the Abba Skylift have 'cups'/hollow ends that fit over the swingarm pivot bolts.......no 'pins'

....below - fitting kit for the Multistrada 1200 - the locating lugs top right replace the standard items bottom right.

As far as I know the same kit fits all MTS1200 models/years 2010 - 2014............but check that with Abba ;-)

  14. UPDATE: Oh boy.....SO, local Ducati dealer diagnose blown SUSPENSION ECU! This is new as haven't heard that one before. So they replace that - errors clear BUUUUUUUUT Rear shock's not working! So now they're replacing that. This means that, in the past 6 weeks my bike has had two new tyres, new chain and sprockets, new BBS ECU, new DES ECU, new Fork leg bottom (Recall work), an intermediate service and now a new rear shock too. Not much left of the old bike to go wrong now is there? Proof of the pudding will be Saturday when I head off for Lake Como on it. Well, if local dealer can sort it by then - they're awaiting delivery of shock at the moment. Fingers crossed it doesn't all go Pop again 300 miles into the trip, like the last time it was "fixed"!! Guess I'd better take out breakdown cover this time!!

  16. Good luck and let us know how you get on.

  17. Seems that if you eBay Pet Drier you get much the same thing for half the price? I am not sure what the difference is as the specs are pretty similar - watts, airflow etc - happy to be educated, they used to do one on the detailing places called the Baron which was silly money.
Really quite fancy one of those, would be great for cleaning the vehicles, I currently use my compressor to blow the excess water off the bike after cleaning which does the job

  18. I wonder how they know the suspension ECU is "blown", as opposed to "physically near to a broken wire, which makes contact again when we started unplugging stuff".

Would be interesting to see what exactly the CAN bus is doing with and without that ECU fitted. Not sure how many dealers have a 'scope with CAN bus decoding capability, though.

  19. @AndyC_772 You are absolutely right. I'm guessing none would be the answer to your question. No doubt we'll only find out after another iteration of "suck it and see"! I'll keep update when I know more.
