My 2002 998s Bostrom rep leans over a hell of a lot, at first I thought it might have been a 'made of cheese' side stand bracket similar to an issue I had on an old 749 where the side stand bracket actually sheared in half! However the 998s bracket is solid. The side stand on the 998s is pretty flexible though at times looks like a banana! Is this pretty common? Has anyone had a 998 side stand snap on them?
There do lean quite a lot, depending on the ride height setting. A popular up grade is fitting a 848/1098 side stand which props them up a bit more. I have one for sale....What a coincidence! :Woot:
my 916 stand is oem and very low too, but its been like this since 1998 and its been fine. tbh my 1198 is more upright but i'd feel better if it leant more like the 916.
I've also got a 2002 998s and it leans over at an obscenely scary angle as well. I've got my ride hight set to quite low as I'm a short-arsed bastard. I tend to only use the side stand when I'm getting her in and out of the garage. Not sure if the standard side stand is particularly robust on these. I had a 2002 standard 998 a few years ago and I remember it stood up slightly straighter and more securely on it's side stand...
My 998 is the same as well, totally frightening angle of lean compared to my two 748's. I bought it new and it has always been like it, I reckon my ride height is too high but I have never checked it.
I have a 'cyclecat' stand which is 25mm longer but also a more sturdy stand. My bike used to lean at a silly angle and It now sits up more, maybe even a tad too high? I could cut some off I suppose but it's been OK so I've left it. It doesn't sink into hot tarmac as easy as before either...
Seems like it's a pretty common nerve racking angle. Thanks for replies. As no one has had one snap and the mad price of replacement stands looks like I'll keep it standard.
I know someone who had one snap, he used to keep the bike in his conservatory and one night heard an almighty bang. Came running down the stairs in his underwear to confront the burglars, only to find his 996 lying on it's side...
they do lean along way , its a combination of the bracket twisting and the flats on the stand itself getting worn down with age. as said above longer stand is the best answer (1*98 of aftermarket) i have also seen people tack weld some blobs on to the flats of the stand then file them down to give the desired angle. they will wear more with time but you can always re do the welds fwiw my old monster (which uses the same stand part as the 998) was knocked over while parked by an idiot in an ambulance. it went over the stand and it the stand only bent a little so i doubt it would bend completely. much more likley to go through soft tarmac tho
Gents - I'm also a bit concerned at the lean angle of my 998S so was interested to read this. Is fitting a 1098 stand a straightforward job for the mechanically challenged, ie a simple bolt-on replacement, or does it require any fiddling? PS I checked out the Cycle Cat ones, which look good - Cycle Cat DKS31 - Ducati Side Stand - but ordering from the US doesn't look simple on their site and I couldn't see a UK supplier.
