1098r Engine Blueprint

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Kostas, Jul 31, 2014.

  1. Hello,

    Anyone blueprinted his 1098R engine?
Bought a used one (4.000 km) few months ago, converted to track bike immediately and tried it few weeks ago in Misano (1st time in this track, 1st time ever rode the bike).
Lot faster than my 748SPS track bike but didnt really blew my mind, by the way, DTC on this bike sucks!
I believe a Ducati track bike needs to get an engine blueprint but i expected to start thinking about it after at least a couple of seasons.
Another big question is the gearbox...Corse one is a must???
Shifter??? Many believe it gives the gearbox a hard time, others believe it doesnt!

Motorapido UK? Anyone with experience in that garage for this kind of work?
    Would appreciate your comments

  2. engine blue print........? Jeff Green GTEC performance

  3. Just had my 1098R engine and gearbox rebuilt. Not much call for blue printing these days, engines are much more balanced these days so with blue printing, performance margins are much smaller. I did have my crankshaft balanced, heads gas flowed and squish set for slightly higher compression. I also had my gearbox rebuilt and super finished (ceramic rumble)
If you weren't impressed with your 1098R its probably fucked. Did you fill it with diesel? I've ridden all sorts of superbikes and the 1098R is a very impressive one. End of.
Moto Rapido rebuilt my bike. Not exactly cheap but probably the best engine building workshop in the country.
Oh, and a Corse box is the same build as standard. Just a shorter ratio. Heard a lot of good things about Nova??

  4. Thanks for your input Andy

  5. Thanks for your comments...well, itsnt that i wasnt impressed, it is fast, dont get me wrong but i had higher expectations.if you have time, i would be interested to discuss with you more about what you ve done to your engine.

  6. Agree with Mary, maybe get some dyno time booked, sounds like you might be missing a few hp ? At brands on Monday I was short shifting and still going past some fast bikes very easily

  7. Mine was built by JHP and has the corse gearbox but no quick shift, I think to be safe a Nova box would be a good idea if you are going to run a quickshift though..

  8. What he said. Either that or you have a restrictor on it. Everyone I know talks of power wheelies at 160mph with a hint of incline or bump, and nearly 100lb ft torq on tap would feel like getting off a 125 onto you 748 type difference from 748 to an R

  9. Get it dyno'd and checked. In standard form, it should give about 160+rwhp and plenty of torque. If it has the 70mm system, a bit more rwhp.

  10. Mine dynoed at 181 after the MR rebuild. I didn't go crackers on the rebuild. I was about to but was advised against it. I settled on gas flowed heads, 1mm of squish to raise compression slightly, super finished gearbox and custom mapped on the dyno by the guru that is Wilf.

It already had 70mm system, ECU, DP exhaust cams and enlarged bellmouths.

I had a shake down at Donington a few weeks and oh sweet lordie, I love that bike! To be fair I'd probably lap quicker on an R6 cos the 1098R is a wild man and I have to keep rolling off (pesky wheelies). You'd have to be a more skilled jockey than me to squeeze the best out of this bad boy.....

  11. Thumb brake is the answer I hear

  12. Got one.... Keep forgetting to press the bastard in blind panic.

  13. Never ridden one, I must try one back to back with my K5

  14. Not sure guys...will have to ride it again as it was my first time on it, maybe i was so rusty and scared and i didnt open the throttle till the end.
What i can say for sure though is that i didnt like the gear box.
Dyno is the best solution but where i live is f. expensive and i am not sure if i can trust the numbers.
By the way, i have the full 70mm Termi's.

  15. Mary, not sure about the doing anything with the heads unless they already have some serious shit on them. Decreasing the squish with standard pistons and the rest, is it something the guys at MR are sure it wont give any problem?

  16. You can have a shot on mine if our paths cross on a trackday. I run race shift and it puts some people off from having a go.

Had a K5 too. Stonking engine and excellent all rounder.... But not as involving as a 1098R!

  17. Nah, you won't go far wrong with MR. They'll keep you right and your engine will like brand new when they've finished. And your wallet will be Superleggera....

  18. Also run race shift on mine, have done for years. So much better

  19. Thumbs up on the thumb brake :) essential !
