1200 Wiring Loom Potential For Disaster.....check Yours! ;-)

  1. Having removed all the tank plastics, side panels and 'beak' to reduce the Dealer's labour charge on replacing the fuel level sensor and Dash (again).....parts FOC goodwill out of warranty....I decided to remove the tank myself on getting the bike back - good job I did!

It wouldn't have been many more miles before the core of that red wire would have been exposed and soon after broken altogether and you can see just below it another wire just peaking through the cable shroud. At the very least I've escaped some form of breakdown or worst case scenario, a fire! (pretty unlikely I know but non the less a possibility).

    Double disappointment....
    (1) Let down by poor standards at the Ducati factory again.......whatever QC they have failed again. The loom is strapped down tight with no scope to move so it's placement has been as is from day one.
    (2) My Dealer's workshop has just had the tank off to replace the fuel level sensor and the tech failed to spot the issue!....I saw it immediately before I'd even started having a check around. Surely any decent workshop tech would check over cables, connectors, fasteners, anything not usually seen/accessible when removing items such as a fuel tank??!!

I know this isn't an isolated case, I can recall there having been previous reports of wiring loom faults - not sure if any have been in this area though.

Wound some self amalgamating tape round the damaged loom and then cable tied a piece of thin plastic sheet over the area.

  2. Well spotted Andy! I don't believe a dealer tech would even think of looking for such issues! A) it's not his bike and b) he's too busy/ under pressure to get the job done! It's an ongoing issue....the pro's don't have the time to do a professional job and the amateurs don't have the skills (well you do obviously)....and somewhere in between is the truth!

  3. Good find Andy

Could have been an intermittent fault later down the line with something

Think ill check my 2010 MY as well

I agree dealer should have spotted that! I'm like you always feel better doing things myself, peace of mind and all that...

  4. I'd send them the pictures and ask how they missed that.

  5. I had a similar damage to the loom on my 2010, under the seat. I spotted it not long after I bought the bike a year and a half ago. The cable routing had left the loom sitting high so that the underside of the seat was touching it. I re-routed the various cables and got the loom to sit lower and clear of the seat. I'll try to do a pic.
I must remember to check under the tank the next time I have it off.

  6. I think it should be possible to check that part of the loom simply by removing the two rear tank mounts which should make it possible to raise the back of the tank a little.

    Nigel.....yes I think I will :D

  7. If that wire had chafed through you could have had a real disaster. All the red wires are fed through a 30A fuse straight off the battery and are permanently live.

p.s. I've done a coloured wiring diagram for the 2010-12 base model with ABS. If anyone is interested I can post it.
There are a few anomalies where Ducati have labelled different colour codes at each end of a wire. I'll get these sorted out eventually when I have the time to track then down on the bike.

  8. Andy, if your sitting on the bike is the loom on the left or right side. Sorry can't tell and under the tank is not an area I've seen much of, cheers

  9. Could this be the next recall I wonder?

  10. that's really useful Andy - it would be a live that's first to be chafed wouldn't it just..

  11. Similar thing happened to me on my 750Sport ie. A wire had been exposed underneath the tank and I ended up pushing the damned thing home for two miles.

Always worth looking under the tank every so often, and the extra protection suggested here is a very good idea.

  12. It is......you're looking for damage to the loom where arrowed (the tank doesn't 'sit' on the loom anywhere else), ignore the additional cable running in front (spot lights;-):

That sounds really useful Derek, yes please! :D

    Left ;-)

  13. This is a pic of the damage to mine below the seat.

The 2 smaller cables were under the loom, pushing it up. A bit of re-arrangement and it is now clear with no further damage.

  14. The file is too big to upload so here's a Dropbox link to it. Let me know if you have any trouble.
Be aware that this is a Beta version that needs a few bits sorted out for 100% accuracy. See the notes at the LH side. If anyone can confirm the colours for the wires in question please let me know.
Once this one is sorted out I can do ones for the 'S" models too and then possibly the later 2013 on bikes.

  18. Thanks. I'll update the drawing and re-post the link. I'll also post when I've done the S model

  19. Nope. They're all accounted for;
    45) Oil pressure switch
    46) Rear stop light
    47) Side stand switch
    48) Clutch switch
    49) Front stop light

  20. Is that a temporary botch job you have done on the wiring Andy or are you doing properly later?
