1000 Diagnosing Ds1000 Engine Problems

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Chas7, Aug 26, 2014.

  1. Hi

I've noticed a few problems with my DS 1000 that may be linked to the engine or related components. The bike has a Termignoni exhaust fitted and supporting ECU.

A couple of months ago the bike had a major service including cam belts replaced and valve clearance adjustment. The engine was probably 10% up on power following this. And a previous service they mentioned only one of the cylinders was running, but I didn't notice any power difference from before or after that service.

Would you expect the idle timing to be off following a valve clearance adjustment? The timing of the engine sounds lumpy when idling. - have attached a video of the bike starting and running below.

The front of the engine is making a blowing sound - worse case it sounds like a lawn mower and appears to be getting worse.

Following the major service the idle appears to now be set too low. When starting the bike from cold (on a warm morning) I need to manually rev the bike for a minute or it stalls - would expect this on a cold morning but not in summer.

Once the bike is warmed up and following a 20 min ride I usually need to manually rev the bike coming to a stop at lights or the bike stalls. If the bike stalls the starter keeps turning over without the engine starting as if it's flooded. Worse case with this I would need to wait a couple of minutes then the engine would turn over.

Would like to get an idea of how serious these issues could be before speaking to the garage that did a recent service. Never had a problem with this garage but I don't understand why they didn't pick these issues up.

    Thanks

  2. Charlie that sounds pretty unhealthy to me (and I used to have one). Assuming it ran fine after it's major service and you were happy with the work they did; I would take it straight back for them to inspect. I assume they are an experienced Ducati specialist though.

    Good luck.

  3. Cheers Kirky, will have a chat with them tomorrow.

  4. sounds like a plug has come loose to me..o_O
obviously check loose ht leads etc as well.
its misfiring but what the noise is at the front i dont know(loose exhaust collar?) so ill stick with loose plug for now as im unfamiliar with that engine.

  5. For starters why did the garage let the bike out if it was "running on one cylinder". Odd. Secondly I would have assumed they would have done a TPS reset and idle adjustment after the belt change and valve shims. If it is still running lumpy, check both plugs are sparking and the coil packs are working OK.

  6. The garage that did the previous full service was booked up for a month, as usual this time of year, so I had the bike sent to another specialist Ducati garage.

Got the following quote back for the work - £700 (including £80 to and from pickup service) and have now got the bike back.

Replace all exhaust gaskets with an exhaust gasket kit - 5 hours.
Replace RPM sensor, reset codes and road test - 1/2 hour
Diagnostics and investigate running faults - 2 hours
Fuel setup, throttle body balance TPS reset - 2 hours

Do those times seem reasonable for those jobs?

The bike is running a lot better but the lean to too rich problem is still there. They said it's most likely an ECU issue, ie. the ECU needs flashing, which they don't offer, but can send it to Holland for 250 euro's.

None of it relates to the previous main service so don't have an issue with the previous garage.

The pickup service is an obvious rip off, given a competitor is 30 quid all in and they waiver it if labour is over 2 hours.

  7. Rather than reflashing your bike may benefit from the CO level being correctly set up and the throttle bodies balanced. This can be done DIY using Ducatidiag, a gas analyser and vacuum gauges.

  8. Not that I have time atm to do anything other than chain and basic maintenance but how much would a Ducatidiag, a gas analyser and vacuum gauges set me back? And can they be stored in a tiny garden shed?

  9. did they say faulty ecu or ecu requires set up.

  10. Here's all the notes on the invoice:

    Fuel adjustment attempted, no improvement
RPM, TPS, Coil 1+2 All fault codes present
    Trimmer lean at -19
    Spare TPS tried, no improvement
Bike still struggles to setup and runs rich then lean
Suspected ECU, as also random fault codes are appearing

They suggested flashing the ECU. I get the impression I've overpaid a lot for the labour and given they've returned the bike and it's still generating errors would like to get them to fix it without draining any more labour costs out of me.

Worth speaking to Ducati UK or Italy to get some recommended labour times for those jobs?.

Cheers, ChrisW. Once my two young kids are older, should have some time to do this stuff myself! ;)

  11. The coil faults could just be as simple as replacing the coil/injector/fuel pump relay. A £1.99 part off eBay. I could loan you an ECU flashed to the DP map to see if there is an improvement. Do you know if it is an IAW59M or IAW5AM? If not send me the info off the labels on the ECU.

  12. Stupid question, but where is the ECU located on a Multi 1000 DS Chris?

  13. Under battery (ignore arrows as I've borrowed image)

  14. As Chris mentioned, the errors you are seeing are commonly related to a dodgy ignition relay. The blowing from the front of the engine could be the exhaust gasket. Again, whilst not that common, it can happen as the front header needs moving to get the oil pre filter out during a service. A new gasket should sort it.
As for the running issues... Idle is controlled by the ECU and is not adjustable. There's a spool valve that bleeds air into the intakes to control idle. The bikes are getting a few years under their belts and the hoses from this valve can start to perish. Worth checking those. These can play havoc with setting up the fuelling.
Also, have a look thru the history for a fuel filter replacement. It needs doing regularly, if not every year then at least every two.

  15. Hi Nelly, cheers for the reply.

To give you a little bit of the history, I had the bike main serviced 2 months ago by a different garage that did the exhaust gasket and investigation into the idle issue. As part of the main service they replaced the fuel filter. Also spoke to them on the phone today and they said they check all the hoses for perishing and that the hoses from the spool valve were fine.

Chatting with Chris now in a PM about getting the loan ECU setup. Will report back on the results.

  16. Got the reflashed ECU from Chris. How do I get the existing clips off the existing ECU? They seem to both roll inwards somehow?

  17. For info of all

Press button down (Yellow Arrow) and at same time rotate bar forward (Red Arrow)

  18. Cheers Chris. Mentioned to Chris in a PM but unfortunately the virginised and reflashed ECU (mapped to my current higher performance ECU model) made no difference. Having ridden the bike for a week I'm sure I can live with it till the next service.

  19. Update on this, tried fitting a virginised and reflashed ECU (again) followed by a TPS reset and retrimming the fuel this time and it fixed the issue. Idle is spot on now when cold and warmed up. No more nursing the throttle on roll-off when coming to a stop.

    Cheer all!
