1200 Cable To Charge Iphone (4s) From 12v Bike Outlet

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by JimboP, Aug 10, 2014.

  1. I haven't yet been able to get my iPhone cable plumbed into the sat nav feed, so I need a temporary solution and was thinking of plugging it into one of the 12v outlet sockets on the bike. Does anyone know what the type of socket is called and if anyone sells this type of cable?

  2. Get on ebay and search 'Hella Plug' and 'Motorcycle USB'

There are loads to choose from. A USB socket would give you the option to charge other devices.

  3. I was thinking of getting the interphone 2xusb to go in the din/hella plug socket. Anyone have any good or bad news on these?

  4. I can't see the point of those powerlet/hella sockets, cos almost all car charging leads for electronic goods come with a normal cigar lighter plug. Just get a normal cigar lighter socket, wire it into a switched live and away you go.

  5. Because of where I wanted the outlet, a cigar style lighter socket wouldn't fit. They are much bigger than a DIN socket.

  6. So you've had to change the plugs on all your power leads?

  7. I was trying to get this to work before I went to the EMM trip but failed miserably. I could get power to the front of the bike but was unable to get a USB socket working properly to charge things. It might be worth buying a dedicated lead and running it directly from the battery (with a fuse).

These guys carry a lot of different options, I used this one on page 2 'Auxiliary right angle power plug ELA00016' together with some SAE leads I had already:

  8. Dont forget that USB is 5V 500MA-2A. So anything going through the vehicle supply needs to be regulated from 12V.

  9. hi all, funny-ly enough I found my powerlet iphone lead over the weekend and I am going to sell it as now have android phone if anyone wants it ? - am taking picture and going to post it on the for sale page tomorrow.

  10. That's probably why nothing worked for me then! Any idea how to do this easily?

This is the Powerlet kit I had originally on my Aprilia. I didn't want to run the cable directly to the battery and use the tank bag connector (I'd bought a new tank bag and I didn't want to cut a hole in this one).

I made up an SAE flylead using the right-angled plug and I bought one of these and plugged it into the Powerlet cigarette lighter socket. I got current at the socket but nothing with any USB device plugged in.

I also bought one of these but this didn't work with the USB socket either...

  11. Erm...takes 20 min to fit the ultimate add ons kit and you cam have varied attachments for varied devices

  12. Figaro, the power outlet shown is one the stock ones which come with the bike, that I R&R'D from the rear. It would be nice if Ducati would put one up front, as now I have to do it again with the 2013! You can order almost any plug configuration from Powerlet.

  13. Optimate do a SAE connector that has the 5V conversion built in . 5V 1A is sufficient for most devices. Though if your planning to charge something like a tablet you will need 5V 2A output.

Alternatively you can use your existing connectors but will need to plug something into that that does the conversion.

I carry the optimate one under my seat in case of break down so dont have to worry about phone battery.. It plugs straight into the charging pig tail from the bike battery. So all I now have to worry about is breaking down somewhere with no reception :)

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  14. Thanks - so if I throw the griffin one away and get a 5v 2amp one then I should be ok?

  15. 2A is fine. Devices will only pull as much as they need up to the amount available.
