1198 Paddock stand pin size.

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Ian, Jul 29, 2012.

  1. Hi there.

Having just bought a paddock stand i seem to have been led up the garden path with the pin size required. The 1098 one i was supplied with (with the assurance it would fit!) only fits to the step 6cm along it - the last 3.5cm remains external to the hub. It wouldn't be a major snag to turn it down and remove the step, but the external diameter seems a tad loose, leaving it rattling more than i'd like. Would anyone know the best diameter for the pin please? If this pin is undersize I'll knock up another on the lathe....

    Thanks!
    Ian.

  2. hi, i assume you are asking for the rear stand pin diameter. If I remember correctly for 1198s (should be same for 1098) the right side (while sitting on the bike) is 52 mm and left side is 48mm. I'll check and confirm that out once I'm home

  3. Thanks for your reply!

I've turned it down to 40mm now thanks. It seems that the 1098 had 2 different types of hub, depending on manufacturing year. Hence the one i bought wont fit my 1198.
Incidentally, i read somewhere that paddock stands shouldn't be used for storing a bike, just maintaining it. Really? This one seems built like the Tamar Bridge!

  4. hi, so i just measured the diameters of the rear hub crash protectors. I was completely wrong, the diameter of the right side pin is 42 mm and the left side is 40 mm. I have 1 front stand and 2 rear stands. All of them from bikelift.
I have never heard or read that the paddock stands should be used for maintenance purpose only. I use them all the time. All the time i don't ride the bike i keep it on the front and rear stand. I can't find any reasonable explanation why it shouldn't be done. I have been doing it for more than 2 years and all seems to be ok.

  5. The hub change occured on the 1098 not long after its launch in 2007 and the majority of stands will be for the latter models.....unfortunately for you, not yours :frown:

Just about all manufactures state their stands are just for maintenance, I think its just a bit of a disclaimer. I quite often leave mine on my Gubellini / DP stand with no issues.

  6. I recently bought a genuine ducati rear stand off e bay, it was listed as being suitable for a 1098, 1198 and 848. It came with a 40mm spindle and a 42mm spindle, none of which fit my 848. If anyone has a spare 848 spindle i would be interested in buying it or would swop for one of these lager ones

  7. Just bought a Biketech one for my 1198 and it has a 40mm spindle. It doesnt seem to be very long though so only goes into the hub to about half way, looking at others it seems they are all like this. Oh and one other thing..the damn this is JUST too wide to fit on my bike lift without hanging a wheel over the side (it has two wheels per side) Other than that it is really easy to operate with one hand.

  8. Hi, I have the opposite problem; an early 42mm 1098 but only the narrow spindle ! I've attached a couple of pics because I'm not 100% sure of the stand's make. Measured my spindle at 25mm stepping down to 21mm. It's retained by a large circlip.

If this works then great, please let me know.

  9. That looks like a FG Gubellini stand, which is the same unit Ducati Performance stand, so the pin should fit ok....:upyeah:

  11. Hi thanks for getting in touch, your spindle would suit my stand and my 848 but I have already swopped my larger spindle for one similar to yours, sorry

  12. Cool, no problem, thx for letting me know. Maybe this thread bumping will help highlight it to someone else:smile:

  13. :upyeah:

I have got a spare 42mm pin that you can swap it for if you get stuck but I don't really need the 748/848 one. If no one here needs the smaller pin and can help you out with it drop me a PM.

  14. 748 spindlle is 25mm.

  15. Thanks Anth, really appreciate the offer but just picked one up off eBay for a decent price and free shipping  Should be a little more stable than the current setup of 42mm axle with 25mm pin !
