916 Termi Advice Needed

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by Gingernuts, Sep 21, 2014.

  1. Hi y'all

I'm looking at getting a set of carbon Termis for my '98 916 Bip and have some rather basic numpty questions.
Most of the systems I've seen on Ebay etc have Race Use only markings are these the only ones available? I'm getting them because I want that gorgeous rich note but can this be toned down a bit when required with db killers?
Is it necessary to re-map the ECU?
This isn't a speed thing for me , pure vanity.
I realise that any old system can instantly become Termignoni with the application of stickers, is there any way of telling the real thing?
Anything else I should look out for or be aware of?

    Any thoughts on these

    Any advise gratefully received.

    Ginge

  2. The termis for these bikes were never road legal, AFAIK they never made any with removable baffles. You could fit baffles but that won't make them 'approved' for road use.

It is said that if you polish the 'race use only' plate then the wording will disappear? and it is in a place that you can't see when fitted to the bike anyway.

As for the ones linked to, they look good to me and from the pics look to be proper termignoni rather than a stickered other brand.

It is best to remap the ECU, you can get a 'chip' to suit, although you should then get the bike setup properly with it, best way is a custom map but it is quite expensive and the difference may not be that noticeable.

  3. You can put a bit of tape over for the MOT - they are not allowed to remove it  Not heard of an MOT failure due to Temi Exhausts, most bike MIOT testers are bikers and hence not that anal.

  4. Thanks for the great advice. Without the ECU remap will it run ok or will there be flat spots etc? Do the pipes in the link look like good value?

  5. I don't think it'll cause any problems if you don't change the chip but for a few quid more I'd do it anyway - but check what chip is in yours first, it may have something suitable?

Personally I would get a suitable chip then get it set up properly, CO, TPS, throttle balance etc. that way you won't have any flat spots and the mixture will be good.

As for value, I don't really know. I've seen cheaper but those look (and claim) to be as new, if so then they're reasonable IMO because you won't need to repack or even polish them.

  6. Mine passes fine with my carbon pipes, but I did chuckle when I looked at another ducati i nearly bought before mine as the MOT tester, each year, had put down as an advisory "excessively loud exhaust". Mine came with a ducati performance chip to match the exhausts. They all have a number on them, and if you pop the top off the ECU you can see the chip and google to see what the number is. It may be cheaper just to buy a 2nd hand power commander than the chip - im not sure what the chips cost these days.

  7. You only get an 'advisory' for exhausts on MOT. Both my 1198 with full 70 and 916 with full 50 both sail through mots fine. Oh yes, theyre loud.

  8. Hi Gingernuts I have a pair in good condition (no, not my nuts) but can't stand the stress of posting - are you sarf o' Watford? price will be competitive.

  9. I have a set for sale if interested?

  10. Thanks all for your very helpful comments/offers/suggestions. Sorry but I've been away for a week and pressed the button on a pair before I went. Sods Law that some should come up afterwards but thanks anyway. Will keep thread updated when I come to fit them.

    Ginge.

  11. How did you get on with this? I'm about to start looking for some too.

  12. My local MOT station has started getting quite strict on pipes, and number plates. He's had a visit from the MOT inspector inspectors due to knobby riders and arsey cops. Guess it down to where you live.
Knowing me for so long he'd pretty much pass anything I take in and just tell me if there was something I need to fix, but bit's like silencers and plates are easy to swap for 1 day a year.
As for the topic, remapping let's you know you'll be getting the most efficient running for whatever mods you do, but I've run a few Dukes with just a can change and had no problems. Balancing the throttle bodies and setting the TPS is probably better to improve the overall riding pleasure.

  13. I got myself a set of refurbed Termis from a very nice man in Holland for £295, if no one here has a set he may have some more..Jurian at <[email protected]>. They came with new straps and he threw in a new set of springs too. Haven't done many miles since fitting and other than the glorious noise I haven't noticed any performance change.

  14. Are you going to change the chip?

  15. TBH I don't know what chip is in the ECU. Maybe at some point I will whip the top off and take a look but at the moment it's a case of "if it ain't broke....."

  16. Don't bother looking at your ECU chip. It'll just be a big black one like all the rest.
