Official 2014 F1 thread - spoiler alert

  1. Not really. JB won his title elsewhere, where Lewis won it with McLaren. The last few years have been hard for JB as the McLaren has been a dog

  2. Perhaps there is some truth in this, I really don't know. But what I do know is this:- You need a hefty chunk of wedge to get on the trail to F1. If my son wanted to get into it I'm afraid he'd have to jog on.
Look at bike racing. Its a money pit. Times that by 10 for car racing.

  3. The Hamiltons were never made of money. That's been fairly well documented. Not as 'poor' as the Stoners, but they certainly didn't have any spare money. Ron Dennis is the man behind Hamilton's success

  4. Bit harsh Matt but then, who am I to speak after one of my comments above. You would break Anthony Hamilton's heart if he were to read the above for he really did sacrifice almost everything to help launch his sons career so it's fair to say that it was he and Dennis jointly.

  5. Fair point. Lets not forget that AH has made a nice tidy sum off the back of his son, but without RD, he would never have broke into the sport in the way he did. The same thing is happening with JV with Torro Rosso
Don't get me wrong, what he did for his son is amazing. He got him on the ladder, it was RD who told him how to climb

  6. Oh there is no way he supported his son just so he could get rich. He did it because he's a loving father. My dad did something similar for me when I played golf in my youth.
RD put all of McLaren behind Hamilton for years before he even sat in an F1 car. He was signed by McLaren in 1998, but didn't race for them until 2007

  7. knew all that Matt - but couldn't tell if you were being sarcastic with the first bit? : ) Always wanted to post on here - wonder how many on the site are or have been actually involved with F1/F3000/F2/F3 etc? I don't mean a peripheral role or a scribe I mean the 'nitty gritty'. You might find some surprises here.

  8. So we should support Shamilton because he's a Brit, should we ?
Funny how the first thing he did when he started making serious money was to f*ck off somewhere else ! (Probably to avoid paying tax in the UK).
He might twitter on about "Engerlaaaaand!" when he wins races, but he has not interest in actually living there.
Yes, he won - and this time on actual driving ability - but the fact remains; he's an irritating, petulant, arrogant knob !

  9. With discussions like this I always think not of the few who made it to the top but the hundreds or even thousands who fell by the wayside.

Parents helping their children is one thing but living vicariously through them is another; there is a fine line between the two.

  11. Same principle (with apologies for going off subject) have you ever seen Paul Weller's dad interviewed? If ever there was someone sponging of their son's talent, it's him !

  12. nice write up on him in the National (Scotland's new daily);)

  13. I like him. He's a nice guy. I like his Dad too.

  14. Shock, horror, the fastest race pace man won in the fastest car and the second fastest race pace man in the fastest car came second.Never been known to happen before.I have enjoyed this seasons racing but wondering why some of the V6 engines sound so different to some of the others. Is there some cross plane or firing order trickery going on.?

  15. Its because of the turbo and engine energy recovery system that were in place. Prefer the high pitch screen of the 2013 cars myself

  16. Good on him, but I really think a lot is to do with the Team. You need a good car to win races. All the drivers are capable of winning if they have the right package.

Hamilton has talent, no doubt! He get the best from a car and can be consistent to the hundredth of a second.

Pleased for his family. Obviously at a young age he had talent. Not all kids have what it takes, no matter how many resources they are given. Anyway, stuff the little rich kids thinking that money can make them win.

Winning World titles in any sport is not easy.

  17. Not sure how anyone can say he didnt deserve it. Won twoce as many races as his nearest competitor. More fastest laps I think too. How many more stats are needed?!

Blokey on radio summed it up really well tonight. Many F1 drivers are just that: drivers. Hamilton is, however, a racer.

I'd rather watch a prick who has a real go racing than a nice guy who says 'after you'

Cases in point: Sete Gebenau, Damon Hill, Hayden, Stoner. Fast, gifted, not racers anywhere near the league of Hunt, Schumacher, Rossi and laterly Marquez.

  18. Agreed.

Some drivers are paid and others pay. In F1 that tells you something.

From the opening race it looked like Mercedes was going to win the championship, and although I would have liked to have seen Rosberg take the title Hamilton undoubtedly had the edge.

  19. and that is the beauty of free speech - everyone can have their own opinion and so am happy to repeat (until the cows come home/imo) that Nico deserved victory more and statistically spent more laps in the lead than L.H. this year which meant nothing when the last flag dropped but is still relevant in terms of his performance this year compared to goldenballs.
