Anyone got any idea what's likely to be causing a fuel leak from under the tank when I start up after a couple of weeks standing? When started from cold fuel runs down the rocker inspection cover of the rear cylinder onto the exhaust pipe and collects in the small fins at the back of the crank case. The leak stops after 2 minutes of running and doesn't seem to happen if the bike is warm or has been run recently. Will be stripping tank off over winter to investigate but just wondered if anyone has had a similar issue.
Check the 'O' rings on the quick-disconnect fuel lines, alternatively could be a cracked (plastic) fuel level sensor nut.
Pray it's not the O-ring on the fuel pump! Mine took ages to get a proper seal. Probably only the little rings on the Q/D pipe fittings-pence to buy and easy to fit. If it's a plastic nut, I've a spare.
As I am not fortunate enough to have q/d fuel lines I will put money on it being the plastic fuel level sensor nut that seems to be a common problem.
Look to change the fuel pump O ring; its not actually too hard to do; Just get longer than standard blots to pull pump into place; keeping it straight as you do so the O ring goes in as it should... Then when bolts are half way home, and o ring is inside tank, swap long bolts out for original bolts and tighten up.. Personally, I wouldn't ride it until its sorted; hot exhaust manifold and leaking petrol are not a good mix...
Check for a split fuel pipe while you are at it if you do not have quick disconnect fittings. Modern fuels degrade rubber pipes over time and if it's an older bike then the pipes might have perished.
Thanks for the advice guys. Think i'll do all of the above (especially not ride it until sorted) as the old girl is getting on a bit. Fuel incontinence onto a hot exhaust could lead to an untimely cremation.
I had the same, was a 3mm split in the end of the pipe. Trimmed 4mm off the end and refitted, sorted.
