Socket Set Advice

  1. My wife bought me a halfords set 23yrs ago. I still own it and only the 14mm needed a replacement when I broke it on a siezed nut and a torque bar. Theyre pretty good value I'd say.

  2. Agree^ have also used a set for around 20 years and even got a 1/2 drive ratched replaced under their guarantee scheme.

  3. halfords stuff is fine, i would invest in decent, allan/torex/ribe bits thats where the probs start.

  4. I agree with the above, just as good as anyone else's tools.
The sizing is accurate, and the finish is spot on.

  5. Thanks guys, yr advice greatly appreciated.

  6. Brilliant.

  7. Halfords Professional range is excellent stuff. Personally I avoid the huge do-everything socket and spanner sets. You're paying for a lot of bits you'll never use. I'd rather have a couple of simpler high quality sets in 1/2" and 3/8" drive and buy spanners, allens etc separately. I find a long reach T bar with a set of good screw driver/allen bits more useful than the screwdriver/socket option offered in socket sets.

  12. As said halfords prof kit is really good..
I have well used mine and it's spot on still..life time guarantee I believe too!

  13. Yep, still got most of a Halfords socket set I bought when I was a teenager. And even the tools that aren't covered by a lifetime warranty they'll usually replace without quibble. Good value stuff I reckon.

Best socket set I've owned is a Draper Expert set, by the way. May be worth a look.

  14. I bought the same set last xmas. Very good kit.

  15. the thing i have noticed about snap on tools is that, their just as easy to lose,

  16. I'm not sure SnapOn are what they used to be these days anyhow? haven't they moved production or something?? Halfords Pro are great, I've managed to break plenty over the years but it was doing extreme stuff and they always replace them without question.

  17. going through a wee spate of missing tools, the lads seem to use mine first, then if they can be arsed they might use there own, been laying down the law of late.

  18. I use teng Tools as well. Their quality is spot on and also their packaging lets you arrange the tool trays the way you want them in their tool chests. They normally have special offers on every few months.

  19. Sockets in all sizes up to 21mm are really easy to get. Sizes above 21mm are more difficult. Sockets sets usually have only a few scattered sizes, and you can come across hexagons in large sizes for which your set does not include a socket to fit. So the question is - if you need an odd socket in a specific large size, where is the best place to find it? Any suggestions?
