How To Tackle Rust On Chrome Exhausts?

  1. I've got some slight rust spots on my Conti pipes, on the actual chrome work of the pipes which feed into the baffles. Just wondering the best approach to deal with this? Polishing helps to an extent but still left with mild pitting underneath once the surface rust has buffed out.

  2. I take it that by polish you mean Solvol Autosolv and not just ordinary bodywork polish?
If you have, I've heard that you can also get good results on Chrome rust removal by scrunching up Tin foil and using it as a mild abrasive.

  3. Polishing (or tinfoil) may get rid of the rust but you'll still be left with the pinholes in the chrome which will rust again. I keep the Contis on my 907ie coated with a very thin film of ACF50 wiped on with a rag. It should definitely delay if not prevent the re-appearance of the rust.

  4. When I were a lad, one of the guys always seemed to have shinier crank cases on his Bonnie than everyone else. I asked him about it and he said he always used car wax-polish, rather than Solvol because the wax stopped the alloy from corroding again as quickly, so shiny alloy for longer.
With a bit of luck, this should also work on your pitted Contis, it did on the italian chrome jobbies I had on my R80/6...
