I feel for you man. No conciliation I know but there are lots of high mileage bikes on here. I hear stories like yours and it does make me worry that I have done the right thing in buying the multi. Hope you get it all sorted.
none left/available they don't make them any more, I have a full parts list with retail prices for the rebuild of my engine £13k !! a chap at DUK said it was a ridiculous amount of money and was surprised it had been authorised. but it shows they are willing to put things right, this said I now own a tiger sport because of other issues with the mts.
A lot of bike for the money and gets sterling reviews. I've got another 18 months of Ducati warranty to decide. Ill definitely be getting something that is more "durable" next time around.
With being new to the world of ducati is it just the multi that has most problems or is it all the range that are a bit fragile ?.
Ahhh...come on guys. 98% (Most) of the bikes have been fine. We have a recurring issue on the speedo LED's lighting up (not really life threatening). A weakness on the Ohlins forks (being replaced regardless of warranty period). Oh and the rear brake is a joke. Low down running ain't great on single spark engines. Some have had exhaust flapper valve, cam belt roller and head failures, but the numbers are small. PS I've had all but one of the above. 45K miles on my Mutley(s) and I still love it.... Could you really say that about these other bikes?
Much is down to personal experience of the product and forums are not really a true reflection of ownership. I personally think I have had an excessive amount of warranty work done on my bike. My previous Tuono (Gen 1) had nothing in the 8 years I had it. Only one of my issues has really been electrical (fuel sender) so I cant blame the electronics being complex for a modern bike. Though I must say that my dealer (Snells) have been brilliant. I would buy another bike from them in a heart beat, just a shame they are a solous dealer.
My one remaining grumble is that Ducati know that the Speedo unit (clocks) is not weather proof, the replacement item is Identical to the failed one (2010 to 2014 bikes). I think I may start an action to get them to do something about this as it is clearly not fit for purpose.
Thrash the backside off mine and no mechanical issues. I have started doing an interim oil change though, as 7500miles on ANY hard used bike engine is a lot IMO. The bikes are getting a slating by some and it mainly concerns the early single spark bikes, a hand full at that. Got two mates with early bikes both with decent miles on. One has had the clocks replaced, no mechanical issues. The dash problem is not unique to Ducati, KTM also seem to have an appetite for the displays fogging up, and Aprilia also had faulty displays...........Maybe we should all go back to analogue??
Hi @broke I have had no corrosion of cases or bolts and only seen a few people mention it on here (the same people, a lot). I only wash my bike about once a month, it is stored in a dry and heated garage. As far as disk corrosion is concerned I've seen that on all makes of bikes using sintered pads. Hope that helps.
It was a reason why i px'd mine love ducatis but when you go touring you just hope its going to hold out , thats about 8 now that ive heard of going bang not many in terms of numbers sold but the z1000 sx i relaced mine with i havent heard of one engine failure and 5 grand cheaper , i used to own a xjr 1300 with 35000 miles on it and ran like a swiss watch others on the forum had over 100,000 miles on theirs its a shame that aint going to happen with these multis Good luck mate im sure they will help you out with the repair but I'd move on if it were me
I think that you have to do what you feel happy with, if you are worried that it might fail then thats something that could spoil a trip. FWIW, we saw a Z1000 on the motorway into Valencia MotoGP with engine parts and a big puddle of oil under the bike, it looked like a grenade had gone off under it. although if you have ever been to Valencia you will know that he was sat on the rev limiter before it blew. I'm not saying that the Zthou is any better or worse than a multi but I bet that he is on a forum somewhere moaning that Kawasaki aren't supporting him (I am not saying those who have had failures on here did this either, I'm just digging a hole for myself)
But do you buy a bike for it's reliability record or for the passion you feel when you're on it? I don't remember hearing either of your Multis letting you down and fingers crossed my 2010 is still running great and has never let me down. I bet you a pint, you'll be back on one Dave....
True Ian they never let me down and you well know I love ducati I've had 8 since 2007 but there does seem to be an issue here , I may as well get you a pint now lol I think they are great for riding but to rely on everyday and commute I'm not so convinced , I'm sure the bloke on the ducati stand said they'd changed the bearings in the new engine so maybe no big end failures in future
Cheers Dave You are absolutely right that they need to be toys and not everyday commuters. Mine has an easy, pampered life.
Shit happens in life. I had a V2 Tuono with the Rotax engine. Everyone told me these engines were bulletproof. Well mine wasn't and the big end bearings let go at just 6000 miles. Asking around it seems this was quite a common problem yet i still hear people say these engines are bulletproof. Sadly not true at all.
I rode Hondas for many years but could only look lovingly at Ducatis because they were too small and, therefore, uncomfortable for me to ride. I eventually went Italian and bought a Laverda Jota - but even that experience (porous heads, blown head gaskets, chrome that thought it was bare metal, blown fuses and snapping clutch cables) didn't put me off getting another Italian bike when the Multistrada came out! It's a decision I have never regretted. I've had a few niggles (clutch master cylinder, rear accelerometer cable routing) sorted under warranty but have loved my nearly two years and 13,000 miles on it. I expect to do at least 15,000 miles by the time it's two years old and will definitely get another one.
