Engine Paint For 900 Carby

Discussion in 'Supersport (1974-2007)' started by JohnB, Dec 31, 2014.

  1. Morning all,
My engine is being soda blasted at the moment ready for paint.
I'm resisting the temptation for splashing out on ceramic coating etc but would still like to get a good looking finish to it. Any recommendations for good HT(rattle can) paints for the barrels, crankcases & side casings?
The frame is currently being powder coated, the bodywork will soon to be at paint too so I want to get a decent finish in keeping with the rest of the bike.

    All suggestions welcome :)

  2. PJ1, especially for gloss black. I've used Techcote before with good results but needs heating to cure properly. A mate swears by Simoniz, but I've not tried it.

As ever, prep is everything. With decent prep, and patient application, I find even fairly cheap sprays look decent.

    Mick..

  3. Painted a fair few lc and ypvs motors using pj1 great finish but you need to cure it in the oven before using.

  4. I use Simoniz VHT (Sperex) on my zorst headers, but even though it is well baked on, it is not solvent (petrol, white spirit, brake cleaner etc) resistant............it ain't what it used to be in the 80s.

........Hycote VHT is much worse and it will rub off easily.

  5. Thanks for the replies chaps. I was originally looking to do it all silver except the barrels and Clutch cover. Now thinking the side casings would be good in Black. I've heard good things said about PJ1 in the past... Hmmm :)

  6. Hi John, Happy New Year to you. Please post some piccies up of your progress as I have two engines pending similar treatment. Be interested to see your results.

  7. Happy new year to you too :)

Here's the motor post washing, pre-blasting. The pic makes it look better than it is.

  8. Painted mine earlier in the year with VHT engine enamel. After spraying I used halogen heaters to bake the paint. Also got the valve covers and clutch cover powder coated. I think it looks OK, but whether it will stay like it IDK, hope so.

  9. That looks really Good Chard. Good idea on powder coating the smaller bit too.
    :upyeah:

  10. I recognise that parts washer!

  11. I think your motor went through just before this. 4 went off to Soda blasting I think. :)

They're not your belts though I hope!

  12. Hope not!

I'm already getting stressed just thinking about painting the thing.

Can't decide whether to go silver for side cases or black as per Chard's (which does look very nice, btw) and also black or silver for the heads.

I was going to get the rocker covers and clutch cover plastic coated when I get the wheels done ... that nice gold ... so the heads would look nice in black or silver ..... aaargh, my brain hurts.

I've been studying photos of TTs for months now and am none the wiser.

    I think I'm going mad.

  13. Red and yellow TT = mostly silver motor?
Where are you getting the wheels done? I've got painted Marchesini 5 spokes to go on mine but I've just got the original Brembos powder coated in Campag style Gold - should be picking them up early next week so will post pic.
I reckon the combo Chard has got is tops.
Maybe get the clutch side engine cover done in old Titanium green? :)

  14. SO here's the motor post soda blasting (and pre washing)

I've since given it a good blow over and rub down wet & dry. I'm now thinking of leaving it silver apart from side casings which I will be either gunmetal or crinkle black along with the Valve covers.
By the way, that header pipe after a quick rub down looks fantastic..

  15. I saw Rich (Louigi Moto) down at the classic bike show last week. He had a pantah motor on his stand which had green casings and covers - as per the original magnesium ones on the old works bikes. Would really suit your build I reckon :)

What washing and pre paint treatment are you going to do on the Soda blasted parts you are going to paint. Also what did other do that have done a similar soda blasting and paint treatment. Did the soda blasting guy give you any advice on pre paint washing and paint prep.

    Cheers Gaz

  17. Not done this but from what I've read, it's using etch primer first that makes all the difference to how long whatever paint you decide to use will last. Allegedly, that's what Ducati failed to do and is why all our engine paint flakes off...

  18. That's good to read, I used etch primer on my clutch cover before painting.
