Sheared Side Stand Bolt-748

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Fudoshin, Jan 3, 2015.

  1. Hi,
    The foremost bolt on the side stand bracket has sheared on my 2000 748 as has the stud extractor that I tried to use to remove it!!
    Any handy tips on how to get it out or alternatively mount the side stand another way? Tried drilling but it's impossible to drill the end of the stud extractor...

  2. Can't you get a nut welded to it, then the heat will aid removal.

  3. I would try the welded nut method,as above.

  4. luckilly when my bolt broke it did come out with a stud extractor.

    i'd go for the welded nut method too

  5. Oh I looooove stud extractors.
    Only time I've had to fix this, which was when a mate had broke his dads bike that he shouldn't have even been using, we ended up drilling off center so not to catch the extractor but damaging some of the casing thread:Banghead:. Then using the edge of the hole in the bolt, put a screw driver and bashed f**k out of it until it spun free. Damaging a bit more casing thread as we went:Banghead::Banghead: Then our 18 year old brains made an engineering decision that it'd probably still be ok so we jammed some bolt down it and never thought of it again.
    If you're a worrier, never accept my advise on anything though:D

  6. Cheers all for your time and I'll let you know how it goes...

  7. just be careful when you are welding it as the sparks can go every / any where.. cover ALL surrounding areas with a wet blanket.

  8. An update;
    So I finally find a mobile welder to come and have a look and he says there's not enough of the extractor to get a good weld on :( so I start looking at replacement crankcases...expensive option!
    I figure I'd try and drill it out again but previously it was impossible to keep the bit directed at the stud extractor end. Then I remembered that I had an old cracked side stand bracket so I bolted that on and used the other hole as a guide. Hey presto the snapped stud extractor came loose, I was then able to drill deeper and wider into the stud and got a bigger stud extractor in there and removed the bolt- nice!
