Bike Friendly Mot Station?

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by simontt, Jan 20, 2015.

  1. Need to take the mevo for its first MOT soon, any bike friendly test station/garage recommendation around TW17 area?

The nearest preferred dealer (Snells) is almost 40 miles away and they do not do Saturday which means time off work - not ideal.

Are the national chains such as Kwik Fit any good?

Bike has Termi system and 8" x 6" number plate.

  2. If it's not road legal then best call the garage or pop in to chat to them before wasting your money.

If the can says not for road use then get a sticker from fleabay and cover it up...its illegal for the testers to remove any stickers!

I am also told that noise level for cans is at the discretion of the tester.

At least thats my experience but best check.

  3. yip no equipment for testing noise. testers discretion.

  4. About town Motorcycles and scooter hire in Wandsworth - its where I take my bikes and the Bosses bikes - IE Desmo MV , ZX6R , Multi etc
Speak to Mike - good Guy

  8. I'm guessing that your 8 by 6 plate isn't legal. Why not spend two minutes and replace It with the original?

  9. I just got some strong double sided tape and stuck my original plate on top of the small one. Came in handy for the rear reflector as well.

  10. Ha, that'd do it!
I fear that antics like that provoke the tester more than need be though - maybe I'm a wimp!

  11. There is all sorts of twaddle talked about MOT's and bikes, so let's get some of the crap out of the way.

Exhausts: If it says on your exhaust "Not for road use" or "Race use Only" and can be seen by the tester, then it will FAIL. So cover it up.
Exhausts: If your Exhaust clearly has the "Baffle" removed (think Termis here), then there is a very very good chance it will be failed. If your exhaust shows ANY leak to the tester, it will be failed.
Answer: Put your Baffles back in for the MOT.....................then take them out again when you get home........simples.

Number plate: Anything other than a completely LEGAL number plate will FAIL.
Answer: Put a legal plate on for the MOT......................change it back when you get home.

Not rocket science is it folks..................................of course it could fail on loads of other things..............but these 2 are the one's that keep cropping up time and again :upyeah:

  13. I love France, we have very small number plates as standard here, but should you want to fit one the size of a letterbox then you could as we don't have anything like an MOT for motorbikes. No road tax either.

  14. every thing as in EVERY thing has to be excessive, excessive play/excessive corrosion/excessive exhaust leak/ excessive noise. all at the discretion of tester.

  15. My plate is as far as I am concerned, illegal because it is slightly small than it should be, but with the correct BS No. on it, the tester ignores it.

My zorsts are straight through as per by the manufacturer but not particularly loud; however the tester says that with all the Harleys on which he passes MOT tests, mine aren't exactly what he calls excessive.

The best advantage anyone can have is a tester that doesn't have a suitable lift for the Ducati and the proverbial sidestand......although he could use a paddock stand, he doesn't bother; just gives the bike a shake here and there (not that he would find anything wrong anyway).

He uses the theory that us Ducati riders are enthusiasts and that with a clean tidy bike, he isn't going to find anything wrong, because we don't let anything become 'wrong'.

  16. Hi Bob
whereabouts in France are you? I'm in the north Dordogne between Perigueux and Haute Fort.

  17. 20 kms south east of Perigueux. I tend to visit the Ducati dealer for a look around and a free cup of coffee at least once a week. The wife and are are well known in there that the owners wife now greets us with kisses on the cheek!

  18. In my view the onus should not be on the Tester to be "bike friendly", but on the owner to present a machine with or without faults for the Tester to test to verify the machines road worthiness. Many times i have been watching other very well prepped/cared for bikes being tested and the tester eventually finds something. Never a bad thing to be pulled up on something. Be it something major or minor.

  19. Yep, what he said up there ..... I know many a Ducati owner that use this lot, never had a problem, very fair and open from very early to late ....
