1200 Rear Tyre Width

  1. Just bought a 2011 mts 1200s sport. Tyres are ok will need replacing in about 1500 miles. Anyone used a 180 rear as opposed to the 190 width that is standard ?

  2. OK, I'll ask....

    Why??

  3. I think the reasoning is tipping in to corners can be easier on 180's rather than 190's a lot of ZX10 users would change down on first rear tyre replacement for that same reason.

  4. I understand why some folks do that on other bikes, I just don't get it for a 1200 Multi, it's not a bike that you really have to work at putting in to a corner.....

  5. I have done this in the past on several bikes, R1X3 mille RSVRX3 and GSXR1000. However the Multi rear rim is on the wide end of the spectrum for a 190 tyre so feel overall that its probably not a good idea to go 180X55. It does sharpen up the drop into corners but can make the bike a little more interesting accelerating hard out of them.

I just wondered if anyone had tried it on the Multi

  6. Wide end of the spectrum? My 1199 is fitted with a 200 :)

  7. All you can do is ride it out a few times if it don't feel right or your not happy with the way it handles drop it down a tyre size

  8. MTS runs a 6" rim. Perfect for the 190 section. Back in the day, switching to a 180 worked a treat on 996 etc. as the rim was a 5.5".
You'll also potentially run in to trouble with ABS, speedo and DTC operation as the rolling circumference will be smaller.

  9. I forgot about circumference. My old Ktm enduro went supermoto and I had to reprogrammed the circumference so that the speedo would be right

  10. Given all the technical problems that could be thrown up the too difficult light has come on. Standard size tyres it is then.
