748 748r Fairing Question

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by Andrew Berry, Feb 15, 2015.

  1. Hi everyone

I have just registered on the forum after some good reading trying to find an answer to a question i have.

I registered with the forum as i have been doing some research before thinking of a 748r purchase. The bike i have been looking at apart from being a bit pricy at nearly 7k (fsh 2 owners and a 835kit, 2002 and 14k miles) has much deeper, lower side fairings, with no vents and so a smaller belly fairing than any other i have seen, I cant find anything out about this on the forum, does anyone know anything?

So any useful comments would be appreciated.

Obviously the 748 is the bike i should have bought all thise years ago when i got a triumph 595. Now that is gone though.....!

  2. That looks like a race belly pan possibly. The non vented fairings are possibly from a 998/996R or are also aftermarket track fairings?
I have similar on my 916SPS - I like the clean look but The ones you picture are not original fit for a 748R.

  3. If its a 2002 then they could be the original fairings, the last run of 748's including my e model had the later 998 top vent fairing sides. Don't know if the r model had any differences though.

  4. Thanks for the replies so far. I like the look, but was concerned that replaced fairing might cover excessive track use.

I know its off thread but any thoughts on the 835 kit vs mileage vs price?

I would rather not be wheeling problems into the garage!

  6. Make sure its a proper r and not a tarted up base model. Never ridden an r but the std 748 is brill, so I guess an r will be better, maybe!

  7. I would ask the seller more details about the 853 (not 835 btw) kit - who did it, what pistons etc? I believe there are two different types of pistons that can be used to do this conversion - perhaps somebody else here can provide better info on the ins and outs of 853 conversions?

  8. Non standard 998 type race bodywork. Deduct a few hundred quid minimum.

  9. R spec motors need r spec 853 pistons. Pistal regarded as best. Find out who built the motor.

  10. The side fairings are the right shape for the 2002 748 but they should be 2 panels not 1 , I'd say they are fiberglass

  11. image.jpg They should be like mine

  12. Yep good spot VtwinDave. Mine are 2 piece sides like yours. Row of small allen bolts holding them together.

  13. have you seen my 748r for sale in the sale section?? absoloutly mint condition has the 853 done by cjs racing, really is better than show room standard.

  14. Thanks chaps.

I have the receipt for the engine build (noted 853 - my lesdixia!) and the work was done by ducati coventry using JHP pistons, at 4500 miles. They also fitted a JHP slave cylinder as well as doing a full service. Any thoughts?

Regarding the side panels, thanks. I had thought that they might be just for the R model, but can see the difference now. I will look into why!

So i have to check its a real R, check the bodywork, think about the pistons - glad you lot are out there!

Cookster, lovely bike - i had seen it on the site. Its just slightly over my budget and i would not want to belittle your work with poor offers. To be honest i might find that a sound R is impossible to find for less than 6k.

  16. It looks like a 2002 model although it's hard to tell from the photo. The fairing is most definitely wrong and is some sort of aftermarket item. The location of the dzus fasteners is also totally incorrect as are the number fitted as there should normally be three on the "factory"\race setup.

The carbon airbox sides suggests it's a 748R but a quick check to see that it is the two piece setup will soon reveal what it is.

  17. Think the seat unit should be carbon too with a grey seat pad for 2002.....

  18. Sofia @ Ducati will tell you what it started life as if you send her the frame/engine number.

  19. If you have the receipt for the engine work, have you bought the bike already?

  20. If the engine was built by JHP it will be right, they have a great reputation.
