Afternoon all... As title, the bike has always had the servo assisted start function (press once and let it start of its own accord) and it used to work fine. The bike always been a difficult starter, but one day the servo assisted start just seemed to 'give up' and stopped working. The bike is currently with a Ducati Dealer for a few bits and pieces (belts/service etc), but I have also asked them to check this over...which he has done, BUT he states the servo assisted start is a function of the ECU (ECU controls it all) and he can find no errors on the ECU relating to this at all?? He has also had a general look around the bike and everything else (connections etc) all seem perfect. So...any ideas? Bike is a 2006 low mileage (3000mls) 999 (deep sump engine). I know it's a tricky one, but thanks in advance! Tony
If it's still starting on the button I'd just leave it as it is. The auto-start is a function of the ECU and I doubt if even @chrisw will be able to restore it. If it's not starting off the button then it's possible to bypass the ECU but you'd lose the safety features (sidestand, clutch and neutral switches). I think the only fix would be a replacement ECU.
Hmmm... Interesting, Have you ever heard of 'functions' stopping working on ECu's before? Could it be a sign of other underlying issues? (Although like I say technician found no issues with ECU) Well I don't want to lose security, so I Suppose an
...so suppose my options are leave it and carry on as per Or re-flash ECU to Virgin state and then re-code to my clocks/machine with red key?
Thanks will check shortly although pretty sure on the 749/999 u either had it or didn't dependant on year of manufacture
Nope, you can select either option on any bike. I must've got my wires crossed. I was thinking of the headlight that you can turn off for starting. Doh!
yep as i've just checked the manual and it says nothing about being able to select the servo assisted start 'option' or not. Still waiting for @chrisw to get in on this as hes the 'resident expert' apparently (apologies to others, haven't used the forum much, don't know the regulars!) Tony
When I got my 2003 999 it did not have this feature. It then had a faulty ECU replaced in 2005 and it then had the feature.
noted, as i mentioned before i think it depends on year of manufacture (unless you're saying your 2003 specifically didn't have the servo function due to a faulty ECU and not year of Man.)? I think the 'grey frame' ones didn't have it and the 'red frame' ones did? Mines is a 2006 and did have it, so should still have it...?
My first 999 was a 2003 S and this had it from new . If it isn't working on any 999/749 then there is a fault .
Yes I suppose it doesn't really bother me, although I really don't like the idea of having an underlying fault on my pampered 999
... And it would be really good if someone could shed some light on the actual issue, would be good to know exact cause...
I've been in touch with JP who created JPDiag. The servo-start is controlled by a single byte within the ECU mapping. He has never heard of this byte becoming corrupted thus switching the function off. He has suggested disconnecting the battery -ve lead to power everything down and see if the servo-start is restored. Report back.
Hi Chris, thanks for that much appreciated The battery has been out of the bike numerous times since the change presented itself... most recently (last week) was out of the bike for 2 days while a new battery was bought, filled and slow charged...the servo assisted start is still not present after installation of the new battery
