One For The Experts :)...servo Assisted Start (999) Used To Work, Now Suddenly Stopped??

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Tony, Feb 17, 2015.

  1. OK. Just waiting for other parts of the world to wake up to get more minds on the problem.

  2. Ok thanks

    Appreciate this,
Obviously this may seem sad to most, but I enjoy little fact finding/diagnosing challenges such as these :)

My thoughts on it were that perhaps the 'mechanical' part of the circuit which the 'electrical' (ECU) part controls may be faulty/weak... This causing the ecu to 'turn off' the function... Almost a 'safe mode' ?

    Any thoughts?

  3. There is a known earthing issue on the 749/999 that usually causes poor starting. I wonder if it may also effect the servo-start. If you have some jump leads run one from the -ve terminal of the battery to a good earth on the engine (some heavy duty wire can do the job). See if that makes any difference.

  4. Hmm good point, the bike is in with ducati at the moment so can't check that but I am planning to buy some hi-cap moto electric cables so can check properly once those are fitted in a few weeks.

However, I do recall a few months ago when the change first occurred (as well as tough starting) I had the bike hooked up to a starter/charger and my neighbour did add a grounding strap to the stock location on the engine (was all clean and fresh metal) from the (-) terminal...There was no change to the servo start function

  5. Hi chris (and others) ...

Just wondering if any more information about this has been poured your way from obscure corners of the earth yet?
I've sent a few queries out myself now too...intent on finding out exact cause of this now!! :)

    Thanks,

    Tony

  6. Concensus is that it is an ECU fault. No one can explain why it has occurred.

  7. Cheers Chris, like I say I have asked around too
(a friend to ask someone who he thinks has had this happen before)...will report back upon receipt of information

Still cant gather why it has stopped though, as with the ECU...I'm assuming, it either works as a whole or doesn't ...didn't think individual portions of the ECU data could 'become corrupt' and shut down certain functions only.

Even more strange is that no other issues present them self on the bike and Ducati have had a good look at the ECU (on 2 different systems apparently) and can't find any connection to the change?

  8. If you are in the UK I could loan you an ECU to see if the servo-start returns.

  9. This maybe of no help to you, but the air cooled multistrada project build (see thread in project & build section) I have been playing with had the opposite problem / cure.
When I bought the bike it was running and used daily but the servo assited starter did not work, just turn when the button was pressed.
After relocating the ECU and all the electrics from the left hand side and locating the battery under the rear seat the servo assited starter works ?
I suspect it was a bad earth as obviously I had to make-up new battery leads ( i used 8mm2 copper jumper leads with soldered tags).

  10. Hmmm interesting comment there...

The bike should be back from Ducati in a week or so after its major service. hopefully my motoeletric cables will arrive at a similar time....I will have a VERY good look around the battery box etc and ensure everything is clean and tight when installing the new cables and see if the function returns.

Chris, I am in the UK (Sutton Coldfield - north of Birmingham)...and thanks for the offer, I will try what I have said above first, but failing that may take you up on your offer (I assume your ECU is for a 999 and has the immobiliser delete mod?)...

Just concious that I will have to do a TPS reset if ECU changed and I have no kit to do this with.

    Thanks All,

    Tony

  11. It will be a virgin ECU. If you give me the details of the labels on your ECU I should be able to match it. For the purpose of testing we won't need to do a TPS reset.

  12. Thanks Chris, much appreciated... Expect a PM in a few weeks if the problem is not solved... :)

....Whilst the TPS is not required for testing, I assume I will need to be reset once I re-install my ECU?

  13. Always recommended after any ECU work

  14. Hmmm. Sutton you say. I could probably throw a stone through your window then.
If it's an electrical/electronic fault I could find it. But, from what Chris says, who I trust implicetly on this, it's memory related.
If new programmed ecu doesn't fix give me a shout.

  15. Funny you should say that!... Just heard a huge bang and walked to the dining room to find a smashed (imploded inner pane!) window! Lol

  17. Please sir, can I have my stone back. Pleeeeease.
Just throw it towards the beggars bush pub and I'll listen for breaking glass.

  18. Beggars bush

Oh dear, whilst I don't frequent such a place, (prefer to pay a visit to the parson an clerk) I know exactly where it is...

...suprised I haven't seen you around?...not many Ducatis aroud here...what do you ride?

  19. The only Duke I've got now is track only 996SPS with a few tweaks.
I'll either be on a red TL1000, currently of road after being knocked off last year, or a GSXR1100 of random colours as I have various bodywork. Doubt I'll be back on bike till late March though. Haven't been arsed since damaging my heel.

  20. I see I see...

Good to know there's a fellow ducati owner (expert) nearby!

  21. This has come from Riderlogic in OZ

See if holding in clutch will change anything? Otherwise i agree voltage or earthing could be effecting the ecu from holding the latch open. Intial start current might be resetting ECU for a few millisecoNds
