Afternoon All, I'm thinking of installing a Motoelectric Hi-Cap 11 kit on my 999 soon, however I seem to recall reading something about the bike needing a TPS reset if the battery was removed from the bike (which will be required to install on the 999) Is this true? I don't have any set-up hardware/software and this would be a PITA if it's true!? Thanks, Tony
Right ok, thanks that's good... ... Although just a thought, isn't taking the battery off 'just like taking the ECU out' as far as the bike is concerned? Or are there small 'back up batteries' keeping the settings etc stored until ECU removed?
The ECU stores it's settings in flash memory and will remember them even when the battery is disconnected.
Sorry to resurect this thread but last night I was reading the 'Desmo times' install guide for the motolectric cables on the 999 available on the actual motolectric website and it made reference to 'disconnecting' the ECU 'quick release'?... Has anyone else had to do this during install?.... ... And I suppose the most important question is, are they suggesting the ECU must be removed/disconnected on this model??... Because if they are, surely a TPS reset wil be required upon re-installation? Perhaps motolectric themselves could get in on this? (Sorry I cant seem to 'tag' them in this post/not sure what name they are under (if at all) on this forum so perhaps someone could tag them for me?)
I presume disconnecting the ECU 'quick release' means removing the 2 multi-pin plugs from it? This will only be as a precaution to protect the ECU if you inadvertently connect the battery the wrong way round or in case of voltage spikes due to sparking. Whatever, it's no different from disconnecting/re-connecting the battery and the TPS will not need resetting
So it only needs resetting if it is physically removed from the bike?? Does it lose memory when it is removed from the bike?
No it doesn't lose it's memory if it's disconnected from the battery. I've left bikes in the garage with the battery removed all winter, 3 months or more and no problem. The TPS only needs resetting if the ECU has been fitted to a different bike, or sometimes to resolve service issues.
Thanks Derek, So in effect, I could remove it altogether from the bike (not saying I will for cable installation) and then reinstall without having to do TPS? Apologies in advance to all, I'm new to working on bikes, new to electronics and new to ducatis! The 999 is the first one I've ever owned. Thanks for your patience with me Tony
Yes, you can remove it entirely and, assuming you don't fit it in another bike, and don't change the clocks, or anything else electronically fundamental, on your existing bike, you won't need a TPS reset.
