Hi Ducati friends. My dear old 900SS has a "porous" tank, i.e. it's not actually dripping petrol but there is strong smell of petrol and the lower tank seam is wet to the touch. Therefore, I'm looking to buy a replacment petrol tank (see picture attached), preferably yellow and second hand but if any of you out there can help or have a second hand tank to sell, whatever the colour, please let me know. Thank you. Malcolm C
Hi and thanks Keith. I don't know but it's worth finding out. I took the bike to my local bike shop (not a Ducati dealer) and they said it can't be repaired and needs to be replaced. It sounds like they can't actually work out where the leak is. Do you know where I could get a sealer and or have any experience of this problem yourself? Regards Malcolm
Nothing ventured, nothing gained. I'll see if I can buy some on the internet. Thanks and best wishes. Malcolm Part II - found it easily on High Quality Tools and Equipment in their 'Fuel System Restoration' section and ordered a tin of the petrol tank repair sealer. Fingers crossed and thanks again, it's worth a try!
It isn't expensive and I've ordered it now. If it doesn't seal the tank I'll keep looking for a secondhand (new) one. Regards
Used POR 15 to seal a weep in my 748 track bike tank. So far the job is 100%. I will add a word of caution, the process is time consuming, fiddly and if you preparation and protection of the paint work isn't perfect, corrosive. None of the individual liquids are steaming acid but they clean old deposits off, key the inside metal and then coat it. You will get flash rust but that's okay. Hardest part was sealing all the openings in the tank so you can slosh the fluids around to get the best effect. Definitely a DIY job and a lot cheaper than a new tank. Andy
When buying any tank sealant, make sure it is fit for your desired purpose. There are sealants for steel tanks, fibreglass tanks and maybe even plastic tanks, they do not appear to be interchangeable, so make sure you get the specific type for your tank. Secondly, make sure that the sealant is Ethanol proof - many are not, but even if the new version is, beware of old, non-ethanol resistant, stock being sold off!
