Don't agree with that particular statement. They have their uses and I for one find them a lot more comfortable than using a clear one most of the time. But they are obviously rubbish in poor light and at night. Only an idiot wouldn't change over to a clear one for that. They may be illegal in the UK - not here, thankfully.
OK, I shall rephrase that, 'Dark tint visors are illegal in the UK for a good reason' and concede that there may be occasions when they have their uses .
Iridium for me, has been for the last 10 years. Would add, fair weather and generally daytime only rider.
On my touring flip up helmet that has a clear visor with an internal slide down sun visor, my enduro style lid has a light tinted visor just to get rid of the glare, then my glasses have a reflector light lens. Other full face i have a dark tinted, but that can be easily changed for the clear std one for night time or changes in riding conditions.
My blue shoei z one has a spectra blue iridium on it, my xr1000 has a dark smoke as Shoei calls it (read black), my black Shoei x-spirit has the same and my Chris Vermulan rep x-spirit has a clear on, but looks fantastic with a spectra blue iridium, it's signed so I don't wear it tho. I have a soumy Toseland rep signed from his Ducati days too, but that's an ornament too.
prefer no visor have had nasty experiences riding into bright sunlight where the entire visor has gone opaque
I think you have to be a bit retarded to ride at night with anything but a clear visor i always carry a spare clear but in the daytime it has to be dark tint unless it raining
Clear visor for me, but I do have a Nolan with flip down sun visor, if I didn't have the sun visor I'd probably just use sunglasses. I've never had a problem with them. After wearing glasses for 30 odd years you kind of get used to tucking them into a lid. Did have my eyes lasered 9 years ago though
I've just bought a new Arai Quantum, which comes stock with a clear pinlock insert. My old lid was (and still is!) an Astro J. I tried both clear and tinted visors on the Astro, and liked both under the right circumstances, and I'm thinking about buying a tinted one for my new Quantum. However... Perspex normally isn't very good at screening UV light, you know, the high frequency light, you can't see, but causes sunburn? Unlike glass, which in the UV spectrum is quite opaque. Remember a few years ago, lots of sunglasses had 100% UV screening stickers on? I think I would have to ask some questions about whether dark visors deal with this. The worst case scenario is a tinted visor, which causes your iris to open, then floods your retinas with UV. I don't want any of that. Anyone know?
I use a light tint pretty much all the time, but have been considering the reactive pinlock insert, has anyone tried one?
I nearly always use a tinted visor which I find perfect for me. I made the mistake on Sunday of riding to the 'Groombridge' event wearing my clear visor as I thought that there might be the possibility of returning after sunset. I left the event at about 6ish and as I was riding westwards the sun was shining right in my eyes, most uncomfortable and potentially very dangerous. Yes, I know I should have carried both visors with me, I made a mistake! I met Bikerbabe yesterday who showed me her new Reactorlight visor that she had bought from Helmet city and was full of praise for it, I didn't even know there was such a thing, worthy of consideration methinks!
I start work early mornings so its a clear visor then, then a dark, well actually a reflective silver visor, if its sunny enough on the way home. If im on the bike, but not going to work, then i pretty much wear the dark visor (with a pinlock) all the time
dark visor for me during daytime , clear of a night time , doing the visor change malarky (that i can do with the lid on) on an arai, sunglasses under my lid gives me a headache within 20mins
The worst case scenario is a tinted visor, which causes your iris to open, then floods your retinas with UV. I don't want any of that. Anyone know?[/QUOTE] Glad you brought that to my attention Chewy, I hadn't thought about that aspect! Needs further research.
It's mentioned on the Arai US site that they give UV protection. Nothing on the UK site, it's simply not mentioned at all.
I use a clear visor with a tinted pin lock insert. Fog free and can be changed in seconds. I tried to get a photochromic pin lock some years ago, they were promising to bring them out soon! Eventually I spoke to them direct and they said that it wasn’t going to happen because it needed to be too thick to accommodate the reactive layer so they scrapped the project. However I think they now offer one but only in the more expensive Pro tec range at around £45
