That time of year again, the bill for the 'hosting' has arrived and the bill for the Domain name renewal will be due soon also. As I no longer benefit from maintaining the website it's hard for me to justify the expense of keeping it running (I sold the Mutley a few months back..... and some time prior to that the site became 'static' [no new content].....that's a long story posted elsewhere on the forum) - it would however be a shame for all the content/my efforts to disappear, so.... Two options: 1) Someone with the facilities steps up and the site content is transferred to a server they run.....i.e. no further running costs other than the Domain name if it's decided to keep that (small cost and worthwhile keeping imho for ease of access [mts1200.info is very well published all over the place] and current search engine listings). 2) People that have benefited from the site content one way or another make a small 'donation' towards the site upkeep. Option (2) is my preference as I keep control of everything I put a lot of time and effort into and more importantly I can still edit content (updates, corrections, deletions etc......which I am happy to continue doing) Your choice though, I'm happy to go with the flow..............see the Poll ;-) Thanks Andy
I went for option two bud. Had a similar issue on the 675cc forum and through donations of around £5 made plenty.
Thanks...........need to decide on the way forward first and another option has been presented, 'selling' the site - if 'donations' is the way to go will post details when the decision is made ;-)
Hi Andy, many thanks for the running of the site, it has been a massively useful resource to myself in the short 12 months I have owned a Mutley. I may be able to help. I have hosting, "proper" insofar as it's got SQL, PHP, and all that good stuff. I barely use it, other than for some web development training, picture hosting and a small personal site (3GB of space is all I use, average 250MB a month bandwidth) I am more than happy to help move that content to my hosting, and give relevant administrative permissions to that domain so that you can continue to do just as you are doing now, but without the costs for you personally. The hosting I have is completely unlimited, I did some testing for Dreamhost a long time ago and so enjoy that unlimited account as a reward for doing it. I will be renewing my three year hosting plan as I do every three years for the foreseeable future so the site will have a home for as long as people want it. Happy to discuss further, drop me a message to see if I have everything you would need etc.
Andy, Moocows suggestion seems ideal, if this doesn't work out I will gladly stump up some funds to keep the ball rolling. Keep up the good work Jimmy
Yeah, happy to help. If not on the hosting, will be happy to put some cash in the pot over the weekend towards the hosting plan - its only about 50 odd quid in real money between a few of us for the year - £5 a piece from those of us who have voted.
Andy that's a really easy one for me, option 2, as having used your great knowledge and assistance both directly and indirectly via your site, plus your advice, I'm totally satisfied to provide some financial support in line with your suggestion. If the other proposal made by Moocow works then happy to support this likewise.
Thanks for all the positive responses everyone @Moocow ....many thanks, that sounds ideal.....appreciated. I'll get in touch as soon as I can over the next day or two to let you know where things stand (currently looking at another option) Hmmmmmm......there's a thought ;-)
Moocow's idea seems the best option to me (I was going to suggest a similar solution as I have a reseller hosting site with a bunch of sites for my clients on which it might have been able to fit onto.)
Happy to contribute also. Anyway Andy, you'll need the site for when you buy the DVT! You know you will
UPDATE...... Rob of this parish has expressed an interest in preserving/making use of the content on MTS1200.info The 'technicalities' of moving the content will take some investigating (because of the non standard format originating from the original hosting application) and should we be able to go ahead with the move will be time consuming, a manual page by page effort i.e. will take some considerable time to complete. I have therefore decided to renew the existing hosting keeping the site as is which will give plenty of time to sort things out with Rob or investigate/put in place alternative arrangements should things not work out. There is now a PayPal 'Donations' button here: www.MTS1200.info NB...small contributions only please, embarrassed enough to be asking for 'donations' from anyone........a little from lots of people seems fairest ;-) THANKS for the support and offers of help everyone, APPRECIATED
Andy just donated funds to you. Used my details as 'her indoors' doing her nails and wouldn't let me have her passwords/codes finger print!
