After rebuilding my Super Sport I thought it was time my Monster got a rebuild, I have owned it from new since 1999. Monster and SS: Monster at MADASL Racing : Yorkie
I bought an ST2 with Mark at MADASL for £450, my part is the engine and he got the rest. Over the last few weeks I stripped the ST and got my bit freed from the frame. Its a little rough on the outside, as it is getting a total strip down I'm preparing it for bead blasting: One good surprise was a set of alloy clutch plates (all I need now is an alloy basket): The oil was clear when I dropped it which is more good news. The other things I am looking for are the following (cheap): 1000ds Crank and Pistons or 1100 Crank and 1000ds Pistons Yorkie
Its expensive but might I suggest these people to coat the engine while its apart..... Anti Corrosion Coatings - Xylan | Sandwell Shot Peening & Specialist Xylan Coatings Heres my motor before and after - this is my ktm 525 that im supermoto'ing..... You strip, send everything in bits to them and they blast, and coat. They use xylan for stuff on oil rigs its that resilient, not cheap though - the 525 motor was 475 quid all in, including postage back and forth but the lad that does the coating and blasting is a racer and loves what he does. Im assuming the ds motor will cost more but its worth it. Ducati categorically have the worst record of coating period for any manufacturer I have ever seen. My hyper absolutely will be getting the treatment when the motor needs to be removed. Its in pretty good nick at the moment surprisingly although the rest of the bike has needed a lot of attention to stop the onslaught of the elements...
I will check them out. I was planning on using these: Camcoat Performance Coatings :: DiamonDyze⢠Yorkie
Yup - used camcoat for my RSV4 pipes....the finish is good but not as good as the ktm motor. If you do call them ask for Dan. If you do go ahead then Dan will call you and keep you up to date with what hes doing and how hes doing it.....
So far the internals have received the most attention. The flywheel was slimmed from 5kg to 1.3kg: The Primary gears were trimmed a bit as well: The Crank was balanced and trimmed a bit more: A good start. Yorkie
The outside of the engine has been a bit slower. A weld repair to the engine case is now ready for shaping: Once shaped it will be back together for a full bead blast. Yorkie
Not done a lot on the refresh project: Soda blasted ST2 engine: Stripped down for water was, brake cleaner wash and kero bath to clean out the soda: Back together ready for an etch primer and lacquer coating: Yorkie
Its been a while and I've done a bit, this was two weeks ago. The engine has been primed and lacquered and mocked up in the frame: Yorkie
The mocking up show some areas that needed trimming to allow bits to fit. This bit of the frame needed to be removed or remodelled: Yorkie
Today I committed to the cutting and welding (tacking) of the new bits of frame. Out with the old: Then it was in with the new: The alloy intakes fitted: Yorkie
Only a little bit of work done today at MADASL. Stainless steel headers and Mivv exhausts fitted: 1mm carbon sheet mounted for the ECU: A bit of cutting of the underside of the seat and the ECU fits nicely: Yorkie
Mark from MADASL did a bit of trimming on the clutch case, just need to tidy it up and paint it gold: New T-shirt: The back with the same design as my SS fuel tank: Yorkie
