Has anyone noticed a metal clacking noise around the clutch/belts? It happens once the bike warms up and can hear it at idle regardless of clutch is in or out at neutral. Like metallic crickets The sound is def coming from the right side of the bike and sounds like from clutch area or belt/pulley/engine area. I tried messing around with the flapper (opening and closing) but it didn't affect the sound. I can hear it best at idle after the bike is warmed up and it doesn't get louder with engine speed but is harder to hear. I can't hear it at speed but that could be because too much road/engine and wind noise at that pt. I've taken it to the dealer who didn't think it was the clutch and said some engine just sound that way however said he can't guarantee its nothi but I still have warranty if something goes wrong. I'm kind of worried it could be a pulley Here is the sound on my streetfighter
Yes it's terminal, i'll give you a tenner if you drop the bike to me before the engine grenades itself. No in real honesty it sounds just like mine did, nothing to worry about, just mechanical noise.
That sounds quite normal for the 848, mine sounds pretty much similar, you would not hear that noise if it was a 1098 because of the clutch!!!:Headphone:
I'm not an expert but it does sound like the belts or pulleys, as you say. If it were mine, I'd be inclined to check the belt tension for peace of mind. If it's brand new, it may well go away as the belts ease just a little, although Andy's post would seem to imply his has't gone away. You can check the tension pretty easily with a laptop, iPad or iPhone and a guitar tuning app. If it appears to be wrong, get the dealer to check and if necessary, correct. Even simpler, get the dealer to check anyway. I believe some of the early ExactFit belts could make a similar sound and it was put down to the belts being less inclined to stretch (we're talking very small amounts) than oem and the recommended tension was revised downwards a little to compensate.
Thanks for that man. Yea yours def does not make that sound. I guess on my video it's hard to hear but its in the background to the main engine noise like rhytmic metallic circkets. It's my fourth duc and the only one making that noise, I will def have them check the belts, maybe its a pulley. Either way hope it's ok. My fear is some bearing seizes and it shreds a belt. Maybe it just affects some bikes but not others, Ducati's are very individual bikes each one has its own character thats why I love em so much The SF is a great bike it is so much fun and a proper hooligan, even more so than the sports bikes. I have the 1199s and got an 848 Evo coming too glutton for punishment I hear you say
No worries mate, hope you get to the bottom of it. When I first watched your vid I thought it was a 1098 with a dry clutch, sorry. Is the bike brand new? just wondering as mate of mine for the 848 evo and got clutch converted to dry from wet.
Haha exactly. Almost sounds like a dry clutch. It's a streetfighter 848 2014 with a wet clutch. Only 600 miles on it. I took it to dealer prior to first service and he heard the noise but wasn't sure what it was. Said prob just engine as some ducs sound diff, he didn't think it was the clutch. Said they'll have a look at oil at first service. Said to see if it gets worse but otherwise it's covered under warranty. Don't want something to pop when I'm riding though and warranty runs out in a year. Tried to get a second opinion from a local mechanic but that guy didn't even hear the sound said it sounded normal to him.
2nd mechanic probably thought it was a dry clutch, You get 2 years warranty on a Ducati from new so whatever day it was registered its 2 years from that date
Is It louder with the belt covers off?? You could try using a tube as a stethoscope to try and identify where it's coming from. Just don't get it jammed in the belts...
I just took the covers off to see if I can see anything binding but it sounds just as loud w them on. It's hard to pinpoint with all the engine noise. I tried the whole long screwdriver method but it just leads me to clutch cover belt cover area
I've been out on mine today and it makes a similar noise so I don't think it's anything to worry about. :Wideyed:
Glad you reawoke the thread, I missed it first time round, have you got the same? With cover removed, there is a trick you can try that the car trade use but can be frowned upon by purists. I can fill you in in detail if you PM me.
