Hi Guys With reference to Street Fighters and Super Motards, do you think you are better taking a superbike and turning it into a street fighter or a dirt bike and making it a Super Moto or just buying one where all the work has been done for you by the manufacturer? Or even buying one where somebody else has done all the hard work and expense of converting it? I appreciate it is probably cheaper to buy one ready done and it depends on the level of an individual’s technical ability and ingenuity and if you buy one that somebody else has converted you need fingers crossed that they did it right. Just looking for past experiences really. Peace
Depends on use.For supermotard road use id buy a off the peg bike now or go for a cheap ish enduro and stick the sm wheels etc on.For racing your going to want a mx bike surely.I had a KTM 625 SC and it was a lot of fun round town commuting 15 mls to work and on twisty lanes. Saying that id still love to buy my old KX500 two stroke back and convert to road legal sm bike. Be a interesting project with insane results.
Yeah, not thinking of racing, just annoying my neighbours and nearby small villages. The 996 is not a good "popping out for some milk" bike.
I think these make great urban bikes but pretty pricey new ,not sure what they fetch now as a few yrs old.Great fun for hooning around on or popping to the shops as long as shopping can fit in a rucksack.Just watch that front brake on the stoppies lol. Suzuki also do the dr400 and yam a xt660 version or of course the duke hypermotard if your feeling flush.I would love another supermoto along with something like a KTM adventure bike for winter use.
There's talk of KTM bringing out a 1290 SMT, in addition to the big adventure bike they've just launched. That is a purely street orientated supermoto but with comfier seat and taller screen. It wouldn't be hard to pare that back down into a true supermoto. How about that? Wide bars, narrow seat small tank, 180 bhp and 103lb/ft of torque. Hours of harmless fun.
My only issue with some of the ready-made bikes is they look like road bikes built in a certain style, like a fashion option. A 2 wheel version of a 4x4 that is not really built for off road, a Ford Kuga. In my head a super moto should look like this.
