Hyper 821 Feels Under Geared [compared To Monster]

  1. hi everyone. anyone had a Monster before? coming from a M796 I find the HM quite under geared.
I find myself changing quite a lot and sometimes I reach for the "7th" gear..... much more so than with the monster, where I was constantly between 2nd and 3rd gear in town, almost never 4th or higher

I quite like this, btw, but to me is quite noticeable

  2. You're obviously needing to do more wheelies! Monsters are quite long geared for easier cruising. The Hyper is designed for loony riding, it's much more fun but harder work on the longer stretches I suppose.

  3. I always reach of 7th, heh but it feels good gearing wise in most riding. First is a very tall gear and you can feel it "drop" into 2nd/3rd ratios - they feel closer together anyway.
To be honest just under 6000 revs in 6th isn't too bad - its about 80mph or so.
I wouldnt mind riding the 821 monster unless the gearing is identical..

  4. Where are you guys cruising at speeds where you need a 7th gear? I've only owned naked bikes and supermoto's so I'm pretty much immune to wind on the freeways. But cruising at anything over 70mph on any bike without a windscreen seems silly. I'm at about 5k rpm at 70mph and that seems about perfect for me. I'll probably be dropping a tooth on the front sprocket or adding a few to the rear because I want more low end grunt and to shorten up the lower gears.
