Same here, found if you put a finger on the bottom corner of the mirror it stops enough vibration to let you see behind just about.
Yep mirrors are a waste of time....if you want to see what's behind you, stop, get off and take a look!!!
You don't need accurate detail because you only ever need to see if 'something' is going soooo fast it might overtake you..... other than that, use 'life-savers' at slow speeds. Your bike is the thing that is appearing in other peoples' mirrors, which is why Ducati fitted those very bright lights on the front. They are there so that you'll be seen...... as headlights they are rather rubbish in my experience ( my old Nissan van got better lights and that's nearly 20 years old ! ) .
On a more sensible note, ahem, you could try putting some mass inside the carcass of the mirror shell ( if it's possible to access it ) which should provide the damping effect you seek. I refer you to the similar solution used on certain car gear lever knobs, to stop buzzing noises and give a more feelsum throw. You might use soldering wire wrapped around an internal feature or glue it firm with silicon sealant or similar.
Yesterday I rode the 1299, it had only 64 miles on the clock so I was riding without exceeding 6k rpm most of the time. Mirrors are so much better than the 899/1199, I didn't experience any vibration and the looked around my carcass. They don't look like they could be fitted on the 1199.
I looked at one down at Moto Rapido yesterday the mounts for the mirrors look totally different to the 1199 plus the mirrors are shorter on the 1299, so even if they did fit you wouldn't be able to see anything out of them. The mounting points on the 1199 are right next to the screen where as the 1299 mirrors are mounted further out towards the outside of the bike and have shorter stems but much nicer look.
I've been looking at bar end mirrors maybe even see if it works to sling them underneath rather than above the bars. The indicators will need sorting then as well. Meanwhile good view of my elbows and blurred view of everything else + chicken dance.
I am a slightly smaller frame than you Sam, so I don't have to do the chicken dance on the 1199 but I really don't like looking at the panni from the front it's those mirror stalks I think they are pants and like you have been thinking about the mirror blanks and a bar end mirror but I don't want it sticking out of the side or above the bar either. I do believe you can get a type of blanking plug for the indicator plug itself so it thinks it has an indicator there so does not affect the flash rate. I will ask in dealer later as I have to pop in.
Good enough reason to rush out and swap the 1199 for a 1299. Id really like the S, but its not happening this year.
I dunno, I love the Tricolore despite the the mirrors. I've got the seat sorted and a I just don't need another 10 Hp and a massive hole in my bank account. There's going to be a cheaper way of fixing the mirrors
the short 749/999 type allowed you to view the rear through the gap between your body and elbow if you pop it out like a chicken wing. Better than it sounds. Now then, how about a rear view camera, with a button to flick the tft to the monitor mode? you listening Ducati? It could be wide screen to incorporate your blind spot!
