My van!

  1. I've wanted a van to take my bikes to the track for years. I wanted a nice warm ,dry place for my bikes with proper racks for kit, helmets etc. I got very close to buying a nice old Vito, but was put off at the last minute by the cost of the first years insurance. And MrsXT said NO: no van, no way.

    So I bought this instead:

It's a very old Range Rover. Petrol and LPG (73p a litre). It cost me a couple of thousand on ebay and touch wood, it's been pretty reliable. All the usual suspects have been covered - new air suspension all round. The boys love it and even MrsXT is coming around to the idea. I can put the back seats up and sleep in it (diagonally). It's not quick, but I've got the Audi for that. A true Gentlemans conveyance

I have a trailer which is having a box built onto it. It's going to be bigger than a Vito and unlike the Vito, I'll be able to stand up in it. I'm going to kit the trailer out properly and put proper bike stands in it.

    Slowly getting there!

  3. OK Lads......want a half decent Range Rover?

Note the address on the roadsign and bring the tools.

    AL.

  4. by all means, visit, but there's no car there! That's not where I live

  5. I can confirm J is not lying :D.

I always liked 1st vitos. Remind me of the A-Team van.

  6. maybe that's why I like them. Rustbuckets, maybe, but a nice Vito has something about it.

  7. so, having spent most of last weekend in the old RR towing the ducati around, I came to the conclusion that I like trundling around slowly - well, not warping around in the S4: slowly compared to the rest of the traffic - and have decided to sell the Audi and upgrade the RR.

    Here's the new one:

It's a 4.4 petrol/lpg beastie with 47k on the clock. Gets between 35-40mpg (equivalent cost) on gas, with is about the same as Thunderbird 2 above (36 towing a box trailer). Just need to get a tow bar on there and I'l be as happy as a pig in poo

Oh, and cheap insurance (when you're an old fart like me) and lowish road tax too.

  8. Very nice, I know quite a few people with those. Some good, some bad. Hope yours is an OK one.
I'd put off buying a Land Rover for years but bought a new Defender in July '11. 13,500 trouble free miles so far, been all over the Highlands, trailered the Suzuki to Snetterton with it, and use it for work up in the Yorkshire Dales. Definately the best working 4X4 I've had, previous ones were DCPU's and a couple of Jeeps ('08 Patriot and '09 LWB Wrangler) Land Rovers are like Ducati's.......unfairly maligned.

How much is your Road Tax? My Wrangler was £435, the Defender is £210.

  9. Can't remember what the tax is but its less than £300. I wanted an RS4 but just couldn't bring myself to pay so much road tax for something I've already paid for.

I agree that Landies are a bit like Ducatis. You have to listen to them and fix what's needed. Apart from that, just keep up with the maintenance and all should be fine. Touch wood, the old girl above has just taken us down to Dorset and is doing great service.

  10. If you would have gone for a B5 RS4, no silly RFL to pay. Im not a big fan of cars really but my car bucket list does contain a B5 RS4.

  11. bit extravagant to get to boxhill or brands indy aint it?:upyeah:

  12. Oh god, another one to fill the suburban roads, block eyelines and blind the driver in front.
    Gizz-a-lift!

  13. I have a van fantasy too... One day I'll have a tricked up VW t5. For now it's a tow bar on the Impreza and trailer:)

  14. This is now the family transport. The boys are getting big and just don't oft the Audi.

If it tows a proper big trailer like it's just not there, excellent : ). And I won't be breaking any speed limits either, so less revenue to be wasted and less chance of meeeting an unattractive pc : )

  15. A van would make taking the bike to the track so much easier. Even a trailer would help, but you cant fit (well shouldnt fit) a toe bar to an EP3 Tyre R. Damn my boyhood racing genes . Before anybody asks, the rear suspension will collapse under too much load. Thanks straight from Mr Honda :frown:
