999 Quickshifter For Race Pedal

Discussion in '749 / 999' started by Steve Briggs, Apr 19, 2015.

  1. hello all
ive had a look around on the forum but can't find any details of a DIY shifter set-up for the 999 (with race pedal, 1-up, 5-down).
Im looking for info on where to wire into the loom too.
im guessing at the coils, but is there (by some miracle) a wire thats already in the loom for a shifter ?
im not looking to simply buy a PC or Translogik, I'm more interested in a good quality DIY one.

before anyone asks, no I'm not going to use a side stand switch set-up, i want something a little better :)

    cheers
    steve

  2. Blimey. I made one years ago and worked fine.
Have you got anything sorted yet or just the race lever and an idea?
Cheapest way is with a micro switch to a 555 timer circuit to the coils.

  3. go on.....im listening....!
i always use the race lever set up from my race days and a slightly duff leg (again, from racing!) it always feels right that way.

i think i can get my head around the switching side either with a micro switch or proximity sensor set-up, but can you tell me more about the timer circuits?
any here make a timer circuit for 0-100 or 200ms?

  4. What you want is a 555 monostable circuit. It's only about a dozen components and I think Maplin actually sell them for about £10.
The time delay is controlled by a capacitor and a resistor but replacing the fixed resistor with a variable potentiometer you can get a range of timings.
I'll have a look see if I can find any old circuits but Google 555 monostable and you should find something.

  5. no problem, I've found some 555 timers for sale, and ill work out what Pot range i need to cover 0-100 or 0-200ms.
    thanks for the help guys.
ill let you know once i get something sorted, just need to find a strain gauge or a position sensor to use as my switch now......

  6. I tried read switches and micro switches. Both were a twat to set in a good position that didn't cause problems. A pressure/strain switch would be ideal but they're not cheap, need some buggering about with the shift rod and won't be any use if you go to a race lever.
I think I used a 10k pot to get between 100-300ms delay and what ever cap correctly matched the formula.
Make sure you get a monostable circuit as an astable one will remain triggered so long as the switch is active. You don't want that.
