For two consecutive years I did 9k pa on a Gixxer 750 for the first year and a Gixxer 1000 the second year. That was whilst working 5 days a week with a daily 15 mile round commuter trip, a couple of 1500 mile tours over the two years and perhaps 20 trackdays a year. I did ride year round, however. I was also running two cars. It can be done, but could be fairly intensive.
None of the others get a look in at the moment (apart from off-roading and the odd cheeky blat on the 888 - luverly !!)
I am a fair weather rider and can manage 11,000 miles in a year, If I am out at the weekend I can easily cover 200 miles each day, and the tank range is only about 80-90 miles from full to reserve light and none of it motorway.
That would be my approach, book a week off and do Europe, you'll put thousands on and enjoy the chore to boot.
You have done 7k in two years and want to do 8k in one . Only chance is 6 months on the sick . Luckily itst the right time of the year. Only kidding .You have no chance . If you try it will be broken down to long .
Seems to me you are putting yourself under duress to cover a crazy mileage in such a short space of time, factor in the weather and this seems to me at least, a very difficult task and would you really enjoy 8k of mile eating just for the sake of it? If your not thinking of selling then what is the problem? Sounds like you have other options to enjoy while going out on the Desmo on special days and enjoying it properly. Just my two penneth.
Yep - that's about the size of it Bradders. I don't really want to have to pay for that in a few years time
Save up for it. Open a special new account and put in 1 hours worth of workshop time every month but a little extra for the unobtainium bits. Ride the bike as normal. When the 20 months are up, the bike still probably won't need the service but you'll have already paid for it painlessly. This is the "cagnotte" system used by café patrons to pay for Xmas. You also have to factor in the savings on not doing the extra miles - petrol, tyres, potential hotel costs. Then you have to consider that to do the miles you wouldn't otherwise do, you are becoming a slave to your D16RR - which is ridiculous. It's meant to be the other way around. I used to do about 8k miles a year when I was a bit younger and didn't have a house. It was all pleasure miles in the summer. But I'd barely take the bike out if I wasn't going to do about 300 miles on it. But then, I lived in the Alps and 20 years ago you could actually use a bike without finding yourself in court.
Maybe use a mileage adjustment service? Hey presto, none of the tyre or fuel cost and a easy way of doing spot on 15k miles
1st world problems in this thread If you really want to do 8000 miles in a year then just plan a trip or two to the south of Spain or south Italy taking in all the good spots on the way. It'll be tiring but much better than forcing so many miles of a beautiful bike on the commute just to get the miles up. That way the miles you do in this country will be enjoyable and you'll have some epic memories to boot. I must admit after taking the 1199s to the south of Italy that I probably wouldn't choose to put so many miles on a brand new sports bike again but it was awesome fun and having it at places like the B500 and in the Alps was priceless.
And that's assuming there aren't any replacement parts needed. Based on others' experiences it may well need new valves - £90 each = £1500 for all 16.
I am riding up to the IOM for TT week, and up to Scotland for a long weekend with Ducati Manchester. These will put a few miles on. I may also be able to go on the May bank holiday Black Forest trip so that would help as well. I don't think I'll be able to fit in any more big trips though ... just days out and evenings. Hmmmm ...
