899 Sproket Issues

  1. Gents,

Just a quick question to see if anyone else has had the same issue as me.

Used some non-acidic wheel cleaner on the wheels, front discs (as the carriers had rusted) and the rear sprocket (as it was showing white spots I wanted to get off) and gave the latter two a scrub with a plastic bristled brush. The rust on the disc carriers came off no worries but when I hit the sprocket in the same manner all of the black finish came off!

The black on the front discs looks brand new but the sprocket looks pretty shitty now. I spoke to Ducati about it when I was having the first service done and they basically just shrugged their shoulders and said they've never seen it happen and it must be the cleaner I used.

Basically I don't think that it should've done that regardless of the cleaner! Anyone else had this happen?

  2. What wheel cleaner did you use?

  3. It's actually just a fallout remover and I've used it in the wheels and paint as well with no issues... Angel Wax Revelation. Really find it hard to believe it was down to the cleaner like Ducati said to be honest.

  4. It could well be the cleaner, never heard of it happening before though. Did you maybe leave the stuff on too long perhaps? As you say it has removed some rust so if on for a long time it could well strip paint.

  5. I doubt that I left it on too long, was no more than five minutes as I only wiped down the fairing quickly before turning to the sprocket... Cleaned the wheels and brake disc carrier after and they're all still painted.

  6. Strange indeed then. I only ever use WD40 to clean wheels, chain and sprockets and never had a problem and it works really well, you could maybe use that instead of the angel wax you used.

  7. Cleaned My bike today & have seemed to lost a lot of paint from rear sprocket also! First time I've cleaned it about 3 months using sdoc 100.
Looks crap now- wonder if Ducati will be interested ?

  8. Cleaners that claim to be non acidic tend to be alkaline, and in most cases very. Muc off is a classic case. Ph' of 11 or higher have been noted.... Caustic is 11 for reference.
If your looking for a cleaner, look for stuff that claims to be ph neutral. The market is wising up to this as well as the punter. The alkaline cleaners wreck the finishes on fasteners, anodised parts etc.

  9. Yeah I've heard of this before. If my cleaner had caused issues to things like the wheel paint, calliper finish, footpeg finish, etc. then I'd be blaming it. All those things were left in perfect condition and the Angelwax Revelation is advertised as pH neutral so I would like to think it wasn't that in my case.

Anyone else care to try out some chain cleaner or something that's specifically designed for the job and then let us know how you get on if you give it a little scrub with a cloth or plastic brush? :)

  10. image.jpg Bit the bullet & replaced rusty stock chain & poor painted sprocket with a nice gold Renthal kit..... Pleased with the finished job. :upyeah:

  14. Today I quickly ph tested a few products. Thought it might be useful.

Muck off is indeed somewhere between 11-12ph (I haven't used the stuff for a couple of years and tested an old, unopened bottle).

    Autoglym Custom Wheel Cleaner =between 11 & 12.

Autoglym wheel cleaner = 2!!! (not far off 1)

    SDoc 100 = 7

    Autofinesse Citrus Power = 7-8.

    Autofinesse Avalanche = 12 (Neat)

Demon Shine Snow Foam = 7-8 (Neat)

    Autofinesse obliterate = 7.

    Autofinesse Iron Out = 7.

    Autoglym Insect Remover = 7

    Autoglym Motorcycle Cleaner = 13.

I'll perhaps test others as I use them

  15. My 1199 has seen 70 wet miles in total in two runs to a dealership.

Its brake discs rusted within days of travelling in the wet for the first time (35 miles). I hadnt so much as washed the bike at that time.

By the second time the bike got wet (another 35 miles), the discs looked awful and required cleaning up with brake cleaner.

  16. That's an issue cleared up that's bugged me for a while, had the same happen to a supersprox rear sprocket after I'd used muc off.

  17. I only ever use paraffin to clean the chain and sprocket, it won't damage the chains o-rings and after one clean to get rid of the chain was supplied on the bike from new, I haven't noticed the finish coming away. I've also used sdoc100 and this doesn't seem to have effected it either... Yet.

The renthal sprocket and gold chain looks mustard though!
