My choice, and my choice only would be the RD250, cracking bike but better still was the RD400, well ahead of its game until the lc350 knocked spots off them all. Yes I have ridden them all, and all make me smile. Nothing like the sound and smell of a 2 stroke.
Cheers @Chris nice to see you out my pic up of Hastings last week, out if all the thousands of bikes our little 2 strokes attracted a crowd and when we rode in everyone was pointing, olds classic 2 strokes are really attracting good prices, how long this will last no-one knows, I've got a 996s and ZZR but love riding the little 250, everyone raves about the 400, but your seeing less 250's as people have raped and pillaged the 250 to keep the 400's going so there's often less good 250's, mines been rated probable top10 by VJMC it's standard, very clean nearly concours but I wan to ride it not just polish it, one down side we all found last week is the new pump fuel doesn't like our bikes and we all had some form of fuel/ carb issues recently
Thankyou everyone for your input,i am soaking it up like a sponge,i neither have the time or want the trouble to do any kind of restoration as i know any type of restoration starts becoming a money pit, after looking at all the various models i think i will make my decision purely on condition and history and the sellers enthusiasm/knowledge of his/her bike,i can travel and have a van so collection is not a problem,my biggest problem is time to travel and view, hopefully there may be few local to me so i can start gauging prices/condition looking at actual bikes rather than photos,as i always find photo's make a mediocre bike look stunning.I am as fussy as the come with looking after my toys,so am i being unrealistic that there are many near concourse bikes out there,or should i expect to buy a bike with a bit of corrosion, dull brightwork and minor paint blemishes. Thanks
As someone else said Forums etc are a great way to find what you want, mine has been known to me via 2 friends who have bothm owned the bike for a total of 25 years, all the hard work had been done in that time, and I Maintain it, One thing with older bikes is that they've been personalised, unlike us now who realise something is best left standard for future resale, it wasn't even thought of then, but there are a lot of purests who want them as they should be Good luck looking
Both my 350 LC's and my TDR came from forum members and I'd known the bikes for a while. I keep looking at R1z's imagejpg1-1.jpg Photo by howardrd | Photobucket
Buying via a forum from a respected knowledgeable member would be my prefered option, there are some beautiful bikes that come up for sale on here that 1098r that is up for sale now is truly stunning and if i had the time to strip the goodies off my 899 and sell separately it would be in my garage now,no great rush and would rather wait for the right bike, would like to buy private rather than pay dealer mark up price.
Not a road bike but I have a dt250mx 1981. Cost £1300, to honest and original to do a restoration on.
Ha ain't got many decent pics of it but here is me on it while it's house was being built! I use it in the summer to nip around the shops etc.
One of my biggest regrets wes selling my 500 power valves. Had one, traded it in for a rg500 but didn't like it much. Bought another rd 500 but wrote that off with my wife on the back. Left 2 strokes then and bought my first 4 stroke, an nc30. This thread is making me want another 2 stroke. Maybe one day...
It's 2 stroke day at CMC motorcycles in clay cross on the 21st June. They usually get a good turn out. My RGV 250 may be for sale there to fund the hybrid KR1S I'm building
