I've just bought a one year old 899. It's done just over 1400 miles and had it's initial service at 629 miles on 23/04/14. The log book says the next service is due one year after this date or 7500 miles, whichever comes first. Is this correct and does it therefore now need a service?
It's clear that, strictly speaking, it does need a service, and I assume it will indeed by need one carried out by the book (although not necessarily at a Ducati dealership?) in order to comply with warranty terms. It's not going to be a major service, so a bit of shopping around for a trusted place, then paying what it costs, should be money well spent versus the risk of having no warranty cover. This is one thing which makes running new, or nearly new, bikes a very expensive hobby (on a per-mile basis) if you only do a low mileage. Technically, and this is only my opinion, but what I'd apply in the case of older bikes which are out of warranty, and not worth anything like as much as the 899, I'd use a DIY approach to "what common sense dictates should be done" at such a low mileage.
I thought it was one at first 600 miles and then an annual service from registration date, not from the 600 mile service date. That is what ive been doing with mine.
Just checked my service book,when a service is carried out there is a box that tells you when the next service is due,mine for example was serviced on 24/11/14, next service due 24/11/15 or 7500 miles.So service is due 12 months after previous service,for what its worth stick to main dealer servicing until out of warranty.imo it just not worth the trouble if a warranty claim is made.
Thanks for your advice. I'd better get it booked in asap as it's already overdue. I thought I read that new Ducati service intervals are longer? Maybe this is in terms of mileage. I'll definitely stick to a Ducati dealer, although the nearest one is 60 miles away. I purchased it privately yesterday and it's being delivered this week so I've not ridden it yet!!
Agreed! Just got mine back from Ducati Manchester (exceptional customer service!) after 620 mile 1st service. Next service due in Dec - 12 months after I bought the bike from them.
The first service is 600 miles or 6 months. Then annually from registration.... With 1400 miles on its nothing major, a couple of hundred quid.
Not doubting your word at all ,after all you should know.In the service books there is a "quote" next service shall be carried out by,date/km/mi section.On both of my bikes this section is filled in with the date 12 months after the service that has been carried out ie,pdi 19/12/13 - first service 11/4 14 @ 721 miles,next service due 11/4/15.Could this in any way invalidate my warranty ?
My interpretation is that all time based servicing is done from registration date. It has been for years and I've always advised my customers as such. It can get a bit squirrelly when the mileage points get mixed in, but I'm lucky in that I get most customers returning so we can keep the bikes on spec. My main reasoning is that if the schedule is run concurrently, the third service, second annual, will happen outside of the warranty period. Most bikes I see, especially newer ones, I only see at service time. If there's a problem I pick up that's not been noticed by the customer, then it's out of warranty and there's not much I can do. The new schedules list out the time periods for the various ops. Brake fluids for instance is 36 months. If the services were done and 12 months added on to the service date, this wouldn't work.... It'd be 6, 18, 30 then 42........ The only way you can get to 36 is multiples of 12 from registration... I doubt you'd have any issue with warranty within the 2 year time scale. I couldn't say on any "goodwill" outside the warranty period though.
I can see where you are coming from now,i have the 3rd year warranty on both my bikes so i will make a point of having the next service inline with first reg date,Thanks for the advise.
