Firstly a confession; The last time I looked at a wiring diagram was in O level physics. I got a C and that was because of a generous examiner i suspect. Stupidly, i detached the leads on my 900SS FE battery (Yuasa top up type), in order to add the cables for a trickle charger. On replacing the leads i noticed a red lead on The Left hand side (negative terminal) that traces to the regulator. It does not seem to stretch to the positive terminal. I'm loath to attach a red lead to a negative terminal. Any ideas what or where this lead should go would be welcomed? I admit I am a novice at home mechanics (limited to changing oil, plugs and filters but scared of electrics) but want to learn a bit more. (Bike does not start now, Turns over but backfires loudly!) Pictures to follow......
thanks Pipsqueak. Wire seems to be wrapped in black insulating tape as it gets nearer the regulator. I took the plunge and connected it to the negative terminal. Electrics seem to work and bike started although runs rough and would cut out as soon as warm. I'm guessing may have had a rewire and someone used red wire and taped it black!
Here are some pics. When connected to negative terminal bike runs but rough. Wire does not seem to reach positive so I assume it came from Negative side!
I reckon you might have an Electrex RR51 type reg/rec (or similar) fitted.........It would replace a failed OEM one. The fitting instructions for them requires new independant '+' and '-' leads straight to the battery.
You positive and negative are round the other way to both my supper sports. Is there a green wire coming from the regulator? If so this would be the earth and the red would be the positive. I have the electrex on on my 400, but my 750 is still running the original.
I would think not, but not really sure. Just wondering if this is related to your poor running. Where are you based, if you were local I would have a look
Devon. I attached red wire to negative and bike turns over. When red wire disconnected no lights on dash and nothing happening, so clearly a vital wire in the starting process!
Well your not local. I take it you did not see the wire when you fitted the new parts. Have you got a better photo of the regulater?
It's an odd looking one that, doesn't look like either of mine. If it were an electrex one there would be 1 green, 1 red, 1 white and two yellow wires. It's a diffrent shape to the std one on my 750, but that is from 1991 so the shape could have changed. I wish I had an FE here to look at, I wish I had an FE full stop. Are there two yellow wires coming from the reg and what other wires are there?
I believe the rectifier/regulator was changed after '97 on 900ss models, for one with an alloy backplate but this does not seem to have a backplate. There is a yellow, green and red wire but that's not unusual for a number of rec/regs. Ducati had loads of problems with failing RRs and changed design several times. Should have resited the damn thing really.
It isn't an Elextrex RR51 as far as I can see....I have an OEM Ducati one which I can dig out, but too busy tomorrow......I'll find it asap.... Which wires (colour) are coming out of it?
Thanks Arquebus. I will try to uncover the wires tomorrow. I suspect it might be an OEM but can't be certain.
Both my ss's have back plates behind the reg, and they are 91 and 92 vintages. I will have a look at the wiring on my 750 to compare to yours to see if it is std. I think I read some where that a reg of a triumph might be the same, will do some digging later.
After having a look on the web I believe that regulator is a YHC 036. It is a OME part but required and additional loom to fit to the bike. It will say YHC 036 on the bottom if it is.
Sorry for the delay....... The OEM Ducati spare reg/rec that I have isn't 'square' like the one in your pic and looking at the front with the wires at the bottom, there is a rectangle off-centre in the front between the fins........It has Ducati and Lambergie stamped in the rectangle. The left and right ends of the reg/rec are 'pointy' shape........ Wires from left to right are Yellow x 2; Red x 2 (both leads joined in a single female connector); White; Black (both black and white leads in a double connector, one half male and the other half, female.........The black and white aren't joined)........If fitted to the bike it is fairly obvious what they connect to, especially if you look at the SS wiring diagram or the top half of the diagram below. The Electrex reg/rec is wired as the bottom half of the diagram below..........
