The Mrs and I are going to be there week after next - sadly not on the bike - but in our camper van as part of a weeks holiday. It will be mid-week so I guess there won't be loads of bikes there but is there anything there or nearby that we might want to visit - biking related (like shops) or otherwise (like tourist attractions etc.)?
There's plenty round Matlock/Matlock Bath to see and do. And it's very pretty around there. Top 30 Things to Do in Matlock, Derbyshire on TripAdvisor: Matlock Attractions – Find What to Do Today, This Weekend, or in July
Things to do ...errr...watch yea speed! 50 all around there and it gets patrolled. Maybe not a problem in the camper?
Often bike meeting places have decent bike-related shops nearby (e.g. helmet City at West Bay) - anything like this in Matlock Bath?
There's a couple of small bike related shops in Matlock Bath, CMC is about six miles away, otherwise there are plenty of other attractions within a short distance from there. You could try the motor museum at Donington Park on your way up. I live in Bakewell about 8/9 miles away from Matlock Bath. Steve
You won't find a tart in Bakewell but we are famous for the puddings, the Original Pudding shop is in the center of the town. Steve
Chatsworth House is a nice visit. Get to see how the other half lives. Nearby The Devonshire Arms at Beeley used to be a nice pub but I haven't been in for 20 years!
Calke Abbey in South Derbyshire is also well worth a visit - how the other half live after they have paid death duties...then possibly followed by a Norton factory visit at Donington (Fridays only I think), and then the National Motorcycle Museum on your way back darn sarf... Not been to the Donington collection recently but don't recollect any bikes there on my last visit, just cars.
Carsington Water is a good venue if you fancy an eight and a half mile walk round it, the bird life is amazing, if your taking cycles then this is a great option and opens a whole new avenue, High Peak Trail and Tissington are on hand and are great rides. Welcome to Derbyshire.
At the moment Bakewell and the surrounding villages are celebrating the well dressings which are renound for there beauty and next week will be the carnival with events and entertainment every night of the week, your going to be a week late Dave. Steve
Take a hop over to the Hope valley. Hathersage is pretty. Edale is nice too. The plague village at Eyam is interesting. Castleton is proper touristy but worth a visit. Take a trip down one of the Blue John caverns. The Blue John Cavern itself is a good attraction. I was a tour guide there when I was 15. Some lovely walks around there too. Mam Tor is a nice hike.
Fish and chips on the promenade are almost compulsory. The Royal Oak Welcome - The Royal Oak - Peak District Country Pub at Hurdlow does a fairly amazing beef and Stilton pie
