1098 Radiator Issue

Discussion in '848 / 1098 / 1198' started by thespionkop, May 23, 2015.

  1. anyone else suffered with a 'typical of the model' model fault in that the mounting bracket cracks and causes leakage from the radiator??

happened to me while in Jerez, a mate informed me that it is a common thing and should be covered by Ducati.

Typically the warranty is long out of date, however the nice fellas at Preston/Manchester told me it would likely be solved under a 'good will' replacement/repair

Happy days because as it turns out the service bay (no fault of theirs) advised me today that a new costs £650....holy crap......I am hoping that the original offer still stands, as discussed at the Manchester Bike Show with the nice fellas :upyeah:

come on fellas I need my spends for the TT

  2. I think someone on here had theirs changed under warranty a few weeks back with no probs. good luck!

  3. What age is the 1098 and does anyone know if they all suffer or is there a cut off point? :Nailbiting:

  4. I might be wrong... For the 848 I think they modified the radiator fixing bracket in 2010. I suppose the 1098 might be the same year.

  5. My old 08 plate 1098 developed this very leak a few years ago when the bike was about 4 years old and 11k miles. DMC at Preston replaced it free of charge because it's a known fault caused by the radiator mounting bolts being over tightened at manufacturing which in time through vibration cause the radiator to crack at the mounting point.

  6. Ok. I've got a 2008 1098R and had this exact problem at Almeria last week. Is it worth a cheeky shot with dealer?? Or am I taking the piss?
As stated, a new rad is 650 notes ffs

  8. Mine is on an 08 plate

Reassuring to know Preston did a good deed

  9. On closer inspection I've noticed, under hard braking, my front tyre has contacted bottom of my rad and shoved it up. That's what's knackered it. I'll get my forks checked out and check set up.

  10. Mate did you have full service history that you had to show before they agreed to fixing it? Also was it authorised through Ducati UK or was it done off DMC's own back?

  11. The bike had full service history but I don't remember having to show it, although DMC had always serviced it so it was known to them. I think it did have to be authorised through Ducati. I'm not sure if there was a cut off date/age of bike where Ducati paid for it all. I spoke to someone last year who had a leak on an 848 and because of the age of the bike Ducati agreed to pay for the radiator and parts but the owner had to pay the labour.

  12. Hi,
I have a leaking radiator on my 1098. I see it's common but my bikes out of warranty and a new rad is £650!
However there are some aftermarket ones on eBay for £90 which I am tempted to go for, just wondered if anyone had installed one of these or had any info on if they are any good or not!?

  13. Contact your local dealer and tell them. It was a common problem and even though the bike is out of warranty Ducati may replace it as a good will gesture or at least go some way to covering the costs. My bike was 2 years out of warranty when it was replaced free of charge. It's worth an ask.

  14. I did try, but unfortunately my bike has had an altercation with a car a couple of years ago and doesn't have a full service history. Therefore they wouldn't do it, which is understandable! Rad weld was suggested on another thread, so may try that before the aftermarket rad.

  15. Italia Moto in Lincoln have just done me an exchange/repair deal for £200. And I've bought an eBay for £80. The quality and finish seem fine. I've heard they're ok from an engine builder. Gonna keep it as a foreign track day spare.
